HI! I HAVE A HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE FEAR OF SPIDERS AND EVEN THEIR WEBS. TORNADOS TOO BUT I'LL STICK WITH THE SUBJECT LOL.
ANYWAYS, THEY ARE CONSTANTLY MAKING WEBS ALL OVER MY STUFF ON THE KITCHEN COUNTER AND IT'S DRIVING ME CRAZY. HALF THE TIME I'M TOO SCARED TO TOUCH ANYTHING ON THE COUNTER. THIS IS A CONSTANT THING.
DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THEIR IS SOMETHING I CAN DO TO STOP THIS PROBLEM OR IF THEIR IS ANY TIME OF SPIDER TRAP OR SOMETHING? I KNOW IT SOUNDS SILLY BUT THEY HAVE ROACH TRAPS AND THINGS LIKE THAT. I REALLY NEED SOMETHING TO GET RID OF THIS PROBLEM. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, IF ANYONE HAS ANY SUGGESTIONS, PLEASE LET ME KNOW! THANKS! :bouncing:

There are spider repellent sprays you can use. One is called Cobweb Eliminator. You can get them at garden stores or on the internet.
I just use a vacuum to clean 'em up once or twice a week. I like spiders as long as they stay in their place away from me.

HI! THANKS FOR REPLYING. ARE THE SPRAYS HARMFUL IN ANY WAY? I WOULD BE A LITTLE CONCERNED ABOUT SPRAYING ANYTHING ON THE COUNTER TOP. THEY ARE ALWAYS THERE FOR SOME REASON. THANKS AGAIN! :)

I have the worst arachnophobia in the whole world! I have it so bad that if I know a spider is in the room, I cannot sleep, eat, or move at all until I know that it is dead.
Once when I was camping there was a spider that was the size of a tarantula (not joking,) it was called something like, water doggy or some weird name. I nearly had a heart attack and passed out after some guy shoved the dead bits of it into my face.
It is terrible. I can't always get people to kill them for me, as I can't do it myself, so I am practically paralyzed till someone comes to my rescue.
There was a night when there was a spider in my room; I wanted to sleep desperatly but absolutely couldn't until it was dead. It was the middle of the night so I was practically forced to kill it myself or wake someone up. So being wimpy little me, I lugged out the vaccuum cleaner, changed the attachment and got prepared to kill it on my own. Unfortunately, as soon as I got close to it, it would move and I would absolutely spaz! I ended up waking someone up, got them all mad at me and they refused to kill it for me. I ended up camping out in the living room that night.
Another time, there was a spider on my wall, and I tried to be brave so I got a tupper ware container and held it overtop of the spider. I moved it around so that I knew the spider had to be inside of it, got a friend to open the window and pitched it off the second floor, into the backyard. I didn't look at or touch that container for three days afterwards, I just left it out on the ground.
It is frusterating to be afraid of something when logically you know you really shouldn't be. I know that all I have to do is step on it or squish it with my hand, and that it wont kill me or attack, but even still, I am absolutely terrified of them!
My point of all of this was, that it is ok that you are afraid of spiders because many people are. It might not make sense, but we are weird creatures and have complex minds. Don't worry about feeling weird, or completely obsessed with being scared of them, I and many others can relate.
If you find a spider killer, let me know, I need one too! :) Good luck!

I am as bad as you, too. If I see a spider, someone has to kill it and it has to be flushed down the toilet too so I know it can't "come back"...how pathetic, huh? LOL! I don't use any sprays or traps, it won't work. I have the Terminix man come once a month and if I see one between visits, I have him come BACK! It keeps a handle on things. I don't have cobwebs either, that's nasty! LOL! Trust me, call an exterminator and have him come every month, or every two weeks if you have a bad problem. It CAN be contained, trust me, because I would not be able to live without my Terminix man. LOL!

Please don't kill spiders :(
They are unique living creatures, like us......
Try and get a friend or relative to remove them and put them outside somewhere....
I do understand the phobia though - I get the shivers whenever I see a 'Daddy Longlegs' or cranefly. I just open the nearest window and shoo them out but it makes me feel physically sick sometimes.....
Best wishes to y'all.

Zafu, I understand your concern for spiders as I am very much a creature rights activist as well, but for some people, the fear can be so strong that if the spider isn't killed, they will get stressed and freak out. Now I completey understand and agree that if it isn't that severe that they should try to avoid killing it at all costs.
For myself, if it isn't dead or VERY far from me then I cannot sleep, so if you let it out just outside my window, I will think that it is coming back. I am not trying to be cruel or think that they shouldn't live, I just have a very severe phobia of them to the point that it could make me ill. I think that my life and health should come over a spider, so either someone pitches it to the other side of the road, or it is going to have to die. In some cases, there isn't an oppurtunity to just "shoo it out", and there is no way I am doing that anyhow LOL, so killing it may be the only choice for us fanatics *ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME ME*.
*AHHHH SPIDER!!!!!!!!!!!*

Hi...
OMG! http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/dizzy.gif I feel the same way! I'm so bad I can't say the word & get funny feelings when I see it in print. I can't look at them in a book. Another one is centerpides....yuck! I hate them so bad,I have to wake my husband up to kill one.
There's no way I would sleep until either of those things are dead.
Just to really let you know how bad I am......I WILL NOT be buried in the ground when I die. It's cremation for me, or as my DH so eloquently puts it...'shake & bake'.
Seriously, I wish there was some way I could get rid of this fear. I've had it fo as long as I can remember. I got hypnotized to stop smoking & it worked. Wonder if it would work for this????
OH! I just remembered that my grandmother used to say to put dried bay leaves in cabinets. Not alot, just a few here & there. They are supposed to repel bugs. I have some in mine, but that's only for that area I guess.
I wonder is wiping down counters with ammonia or bleach would help????
Good luck with this problem. Wonder is we could hire this guy to help http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/hammer.gif

It is so nice to see that others are just as freaked out as I am about spiders. I also want to be cremated--the thought of spiders crawling on me is horrifying. Sometimes I even worry that people will forget that I want to be cremated and I will end up in the ground (I'm only 25!).
Even just tonight I had to inspect my car with a flashlight because I left a window open and was afraid a spider would crawl on me. The way I act you'd think spiders could jump 10 ft! I try to keep their size and true danger in perspective but it doesn't matter.
I think it has to do with the legs maybe--one time I went crabbing at the beach and just couldn't bring myself to pick up the crabs because they reminded me of spiders.
For some reason though I don't like to kill them. My first choice would be to put them outside. But, sometimes I just have to get rid of them and if there is no one to put it outside I kill them. Otherwise I just sit staring at it--if I lose track of a live spider then I can not function practically!
I had no idea how phobic I was about spiders until responding to the post! Even just today I've had two "spider problems"! Slugs really get to me also. And snakes-oh boy, those are the worst. And to think-my husband wants to get me out in the wilderness!!

Hi VegasGirl,
Why don't you feel guilty about killing another living creature? Are we so superior to all other species that we have the right to dispose of them at whim?
Such contempt towards nature is why we're likely to wipe ourselves off the face of the earth within a few generations......and the way we behave, who's to say we don't deserve it.
I do understand those that have serious phobias towards spiders but to display such hatred......
Best wishes

I was terrified of spiders - and I mean the whole nine yards, I also was unable to kill them for a variety of reasons, but anyway, several years ago my fears got the better of me and I started to have tidal wave anxiety attacks, fear and pain would over whelm me and I couldn't breath. I really thought the world would come to end. Any way to make a really long story short I began taking buspar - wow, next thing I know I am work and before I realize it theres a spider hanging out of a coworkers car, and zap,I ve squised it between my hands, and she says wow, i couldnt do that I am afraid of spiders, I looked at her and said yeah, me too. Hmph. I mean in counselling I remember the cousellor boasting she could cure me of my fear of spiders if I really wanted to and I remember saying its not normal or healthy to not be afraid of spiders, I mean used to really fear that they were plotting to get me if I ever harmed them or if I sprayed them with like hairspray or something they would evolve into some super-strength altered bionic critter. So with out even realizing it I went from that to not even thinking to be scared. That amount of excessive fear is caused by a simple chemical inbalance that inhibits the sensible part of your brain access to the nerves it needs to operate rationally.
Trust me, I know fear- I am the silly woman who needed to be restrained by 5 doctors so my knee could get 4 stitches and I still managed to bite the nurse!!!! I only took the buspar for 6 months because my chemistry is very sensitive to drugs and each dose made me dizzy and neasus- cant spell it- for aprox 15-20 minutes then I was ok- but even scince I stopped I now know what normal feels like and can talk my self through an attack and even shoo an occassional bug out of my path!

Hi Siobhan,
Of course they're different :) But I just want people to consider what they are doing rather than blindly following their fears and aversions....of course there are situations where we have to harm animals but we should minimise it as much as possible, in my opinion.
I won't bore anyone anymore with my views ;)

Hey guys!!! I have a solution to getting rid of spiders and other bugs from your house and keeping them away!!! Eucalyptus- it doesn't hurt them, it repels them, and it keeps them away. I'm pretty sure that you can find spray at health stores-- the spray is the best! If you spray around the windows, doors, and any cracks or holes in your house, ALL bugs will go away, and stay away. If you have a yard, you can plant the trees on all four corners and it will REPEL them from your yard! For all of us who are afraid of spiders being in our bed or in the clothes in our closet ( shudder ) you can spray it on your blankets and such, which also benefits you more because Eucaleptus ( can't spell ) clears your nasal passages and allows you to breathe! You can even spray it on the corners of your couches to keep the cats from scratching them or on the carpet when you're potty training the dog- it doesn't harm them or anyone/anything-which is great.
I have a HUGE fear of spiders-just like all of you, I even can't stand most bugs in general, but I have to say that this stuff works.
I hope I helped
good luck to everyone

It was interesting reading these posts. I HATE SPIDERS! But more than spiders, I HATE SCORPIONS!! And we have plenty here in Vegas. I was stung and in the hospital. I remember one night my hubby and I were sleeping in his mom's basement, and I spent the entire night hunting down spiders. They were on the walls, in the beds, ewewewew!! I just took my shoe and smashed the little buggers. I couldn't sleep at all that night. My young son was asleep on the floor and I was certain he would get bit. There are alot of dangerous spiders out there and killing them (and scorpions too) don't put me on a guilt trip at all. Young children can have serious reactions to spider bites and I don't send them outside, I SMASH THEM!! I use sticky mouse pads for the scorpion problem and I often see a spider or two on each pad. Problem solved!

wow- two cool cool ideas. I'm a gonna try both- sticky glue traps at all four cornors under my bed and eucalyptus at all four cornors of the house and every where else. Speaking of nasal - they is a nasal spray 4-way with menthol and eucalyptus that works wonders for clearing out passages.

You all would just hate my house. It's a 200 old carriage house with lots of little spiders... everywhere. I can't stand them but I'm not afraid of them.
But I recently purchased a bug vacuum. Ha!!! It works too!
Maybe that's your solution. Or use a vaccuum.

If you use a regular vacum, make sure you put baby powder in the bag- the talc powder dehydrates the bugs and ya know - (kills them) so they can't crawl out. Otherwise - put the bag outside immediately.

Ok Zafu! Not poor little animals! Venemous insects! While I was lucky enough to get antibiotics soon after a brown recluse bite (while working in my vegetable garden to feed my family wholesome organic vegetables) , my back leg still swelled and turned purple-black 3-4 inches in diameter and remained swollen and painful for months. A child in our neighborhood was not so luck and suffered kidney and liver damage because the venom rots the skin if not treated with antibiotics quickly! I will give you innocent but certainly not harmless. -meme

Hi Memehegan,
I absolutely agree that where creatures are a direct health threat appropriate action should be taken to protect yourself and your family....but I still believe minimum force should used at all times.
Often in the case of 'harmless' creatures it's just cheaper and more convenient to 'blitz' nature with force rather than come up with a thoughtful and respectful solution that takes into account that we do not have the right just to kill and destroy everything we dislike.
With lovingkindness.

When I read your post, I thought it was MINE!!!! What you wrote describes EXACTLY how I feel! If I see a spider on my ceiling, I cannot sleep in there unless someone else kills it for me. I have to see it dead or I can't sleep there. I have gotten a LITTLE bit better, because now I can most of the time kill it myself. THEY FREAK THE HELL OUT OF ME!!! And what's REALLY weird is, I think they have some sort of sense... like they know if your scared of them. They seriously chase me around my room!!!!!!! One night, there was a spider on my ceiling, and I was just lying in bed watching it, waiting for it to move(it was DIRRECTLY ABOVE ME!)FINALLY I got enough nerve to quickly jump out of bed and get to the other side of the room. Well as soon as I went to the other side of the room, guess what the spider did?! It CHASED me!!!!! I had to keep running around the room until I finally had a dirrect route to the door! Does ANYONE else understand what I'm talking about?!?!?!

Oh my God have I got a spider story!I will never be the same. I have a 9 month kitten who lived in a barn for the first three months and is very skiddish. So even though she just looooooves cuddling one must stalk her to actually catch and cuddle her. So around about midnight I was doing my ritual stalking routine- tip-toeing, quietly then swoop I Pick her up from be hind, it startles her - you can feel her insides ripple, then waaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH. Beneath her a biiiiiig faaaaat black hairy spider- she was about to devour but thanks to me once he recovered, scurried under the couch! We're talking like 2 inches wide! I am so tormented all I can do is scream at the top of my lungs I want to let go of pooor kitty who is absolutely terrified cause I'm shakin', squeezin' her tighter and screaming!!!!!!!!! Thank goodness, she forgave me and still lets me hold her! But I am so fixing the screen cause she brought another one in last night again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!-meme we're talking like the spider could carry the infamous glue trap with one tentlcle and spin it like a top!

Just an update on the glue traps- not one spider caught. Oodles of little knats that sneake in through the screens arracted to the light and occassional moths, one ant that I skalked with a trap practically walked his way off it- (what with ants being super-strong I'm not surprised) but not one spider! The trap said it was baited to attract insects. -meme (an as we all know- meme has spiders for sure in the house- even before the kitty incident!)

I hate spiders too, but I'm starting to get over it a bit. Anyhow, I have a spider story. It's regarding a wolf-spider.
My sister and I were in the bathroom off of her bedroom and we saw a wolf-spider near her bed. It must have seen us too cause it charged us.....no lie the thing came at us like a bat out of hell and we both jumped up on the toilet, then onto the vanity screaming at the top of our lungs for her husband! I've never seen such an aggressive spider before or after but that thing sure enough came after us intent on doing us harm.

why are you so afraid of spiders? i mean, unless they're venomous there isn't a thing they could do to you...
i think you're just misinformed...i personally like to keep a couple of spiders in my less used rooms of the house 'cause they control insect problems...i also keep them in my garden...
those same spiders you're squishing you could hold harmlessly on your hand and walk outside to put it out of your way...
my neighbors study antivenom and keep alot of poisonous species as research specimens, and they handle them in the same way you'd handle a kitten...
you need to seek harmony and not sanctuary...
o, and they were here first... http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif
