Hi, In answer to your question. My OCD started when I was ten years old. That was 49 years ago. Back then they had nothing to help it. Thank God for the new meds.

I remember doing some simple 'counting rituals' when I was about ten years old, but the 'full-on' OCD didn't start until I was about 23 years old. I am now 52 years old, take no medication, and get by purely on the 'will-power' of not letting this disorder become too overpowering (I cannot take medication because of my type of employment).

I've had symptoms since I was 7, it didn't really effect my life until my late teens. My mom and I both swear my younger sister (who has ocd also) had symptoms as young as 2 years old. What I think is that some people are born vulnerable to ocd, they may have symptoms when they're younger, as teenagers, or never. I think various stress triggers over a persons lifetime and how they deal with them are the difference between whether or not a vulnerble person develops the disorder. Just my opinion from my own experience.

Northern I think that you are right about the 'Stress' thing. My OCD rituals were very mild (almost non-existent) until I was in my early twenties and going through a very stressful time, and they have been with me ever since.

i was about 21. but there were manifestations of OCD behavior and anxiety as a child, periodically. it was indeed a very stressful time when the obsessions and compulsions first got out of hand.
