My son is 18yrs old and is to graduate this year (hopefully). he has always wanted to join the Navy, his dream is to become a seal.
Can he be turned down because he has ADHD?.
I've heard the service would be good for him because it's very structured, but I don't know if they can disqualify him just because he has this disorder.

ADHD has never been a disqualifying factor in military recruiting. Usually recruiters will overlook the diagnosis unless medication is involved. In those cases, most recruiters will instruct the person that they must stay off the medication for one year prior to being sworn in. My husband has been diagnosed with ADD and he is currently in the Marine Corps. He will be finishing his four years next month and plans to join the Air Force. He had to go off Zoloft last year so that he could qualify to join in August. If your son has ever been under the care of a psychologist/psychiatrist he will need a note from the doctor when he goes to the MEPS building. More than likely they will send him to a military psych. to make sure that he has no violent tendencies or hears voices. Don't worry, the military is extremely strapped for people right now and as long as he is physically healthy he shouldn't have a problem. I would recommend one thing, have your son look into ROTC, Annapolis, or simply getting his degree first so that he can join as an officer. The pay, benefits, housing, responsibility, and jobs are all better as an officer. He could have his entire four years of college paid for by the military as well as medical schools and all technical training.
