I've read some tidbits here and there about this very possible connection b/w strep infections and neuropathic disorders like OCD, and I find it very interesting. Apparently, the strep antibodies attack the basal ganglia structures in the brain, which have been linked to OCD -- many OCD patients have shown enlarged basal ganglia in PET scans, etc. So, many children have exhibited OCD-like symptoms shortly after bouts with Strep, and others have had OCD manifest a bit later in adolescence.
I find this extremely intriguing, especially since I recall having at least 2 strep infections as a child (and consequently exhibit anxiety related problems). While certainly there are people who are genetically predisposed toward OCD, it is interesting that there may be a unique acquired external biological problem at work in some patients with anxiety disorders like OCD. Research certainly supports this theory. And even if it cannot be concluded with certainty that strep will often cause OCD, it is scary that the strep antibodies attack certain brain structures and can remain hidden for long periods of time. Who knows what other neurological problems this can cause. It's pretty distressing.
Just as kind of a quick poll, how many of you had problems with Strep growing up? Did any of you get diagnosed with PANDAS or participate in research on the OCD/Strep thing? Thoughts, opinions, and experiences are welcome...

I am not diagnosed with OCD, although my daughter is. I cannot think of anyone I know who has NOT had strep at some point. I do know that my daughter had a few infections as a young child, but I don't recall whether they were strep or not. She was showing symptoms of OCD by 3 years of age. Her brother and sister had the same infections she did, and neither one of them is OCD. I know I've had strep dozens of times!

I have never been diagnosed with OCD but I have self diagnosed myself with it, haha. I had OCD very bad when I was younger. Of course, at the time, no one knew about it, including me. But now that I am old enough to understand, I can recall many things I used to do that would lead me to believe I used to suffer from sever OCD. It went away as I got older, but I still have a few things that are there. I am concidering going to get diagnosed and possibly get medication for it because it seems to be coming back. I had strep throat a lot when I was younger. I have heard this theory about OCD and strep throat being linked. Im not sure how valid this theory is though.

I have had strept many times when I was younger as well. Although I never had my tonsils removed.
I have Trichotillomania which is not really OCD but does have some symptons of it. I also suffer from depression and anixety.
