Help! I'm a 58-year-old male who's been taking Fosamax (10 mg/day) for 2 years. Two months ago I woke up with bad join pain in both thumbs joints (closest to my palms). Last week I switched to 70 mg/1x per week, and the pain has spread to other joints in my fingers and has gotten worse. Has anyone else experienced similar symptoms?

This sounds like a matter of immediate concern. I have osteopenia and am considering whether or not to start the Fosamax. I was just wondering if, after having taken it for the past two years, you have had any bone improvement or growth?????? (Rosalee)

I've had a slight improvement each year in bone growth while on the Fosamax. Good luck to you, Rosalee.

Rusty, are you attributing the bone growth to the Fosamax or have you done anything else to encourage the improvement, like increasing your calcium intake and physical activity??? I'm a little obsessed with this topic because I have to make the decision on whether or not to start taking it someday. Any change in your joint pain?????

Besides the Fosamax, I've also been taking calcium and vitamin D supplements. No change in joint pain.

I took once-a-month Fosamax for two months but almost immediately started having lower back pain. I've been off of it for two weeks -- has anyone had the same problem and how long did it take to go away?
The Fosamax literature says 4% reported "muscularskeletal" pain but having looked at Actonel and Didronel I think they have even higher stats for this.
Has anyone with these symptoms found a treatment that works? I was on HRT for several years but it resulted in deep vein problems -- I had to have my major vein in one leg removed.
Any suggestions appreciated. My doctor suggested I get reevaluated after the current pain goes away (so as to not confuse side effects of any future treatment).
