How much sunlight exposure each day? Can I get enough by exposing a bare arm next to a car window for about 20 minutes a day? (Not real tinted as far as the car window.) I'm not one who likes to be out in the sun.

Well, I was told and I have read that just 15 minutes a day of sun exposure to get all the vit d you need. Don't quote me but that is what my osteo doc said and I did read it in a health magazine.

Sounds very reasonable. I'm sort of concerned that the exposure is through a window and not direct sunlight. I'm not sure if the window filters out all the benefits.

Nancy: I posted to you earlier but it got hung-up somewhere. I am concerned that all of my daily exposure is through a car window. I wonder if I am getting full benefits through a slightly tinted window. I have also heard that about 15 to 20 minutes a day is sufficient exposure on the size of about a half dollar on the skin.

Blondegal, gee I had to leave town so I couldn't write back, but I don't know about tinted car windows, aren't they just a tinted plastic to darken the windows but don't block out uv rays? As for the sun exposure, even a piece of skin exposed is absorbed throughout the body, I had to ask my Dr on that one and he did say about 15 to 20mins is all that is needed.

Hey gamarugu! you need to start with calcium supplements and get into the exercise mode. Weight bearing exercise is needed for bone health and increase. Start taking walks and if you have been a couch potato start out slowly and then increase you time and challenge yourself by doing hills. If you have access to a treadmill incline a certain percentage each day as that is what builds bone. Run, jog, whatever but do it. Find all the foods with high calcium like dairy, some veggies etc. read all you can on this to keep from progressing any further and that can be done.
