Hello, I am new here and I was just wondering if any of you are on Fosamax. I have been on it for a month now and am wondering if any of you had any side effects from it?? Is there weight gain with it. I have three children and they are 4,3 and 2. Could having them so close together have caused my bones to thin out so much?? I have thining in my hips and wrists and i have a fracture in my spine..T-7 to be exact. I am so scared that having this so early, I will not be able to enjoy my children or my life later in my 40's or 50's. I have severe pain in my back and hips...my hips when i sleep(on my sides) does anyone else have this pain when they sleep?? Sorry this is so long but I just found this site and I am scared to death...someone(not a friend just an aquaintance)that you can die from this, is that true??? I feel like I am 90yrs old now how much worse can this get??? Thank you in advance for your help and info....it is appreciated.

i thought you mite like to know..i spoke with merck ..they make fosamax..it was trialed and approved for treatment of bone loss in post menopausal women..so altho it it not contraindicated for women who are still getting their periods..the safety of fosamax for use in women that are not post menopausal has not been established....

Melissa,
You really should talk with your Dr. about this. I know a few young people who have joint problems that are caused by arthritis or lupus or even allergies. There are several things that can be done for whichever it may be so you won't have to suffer and feel like a 90 yr old! Good Luck to you. Vickie

another possibliity i should have mentioned before is hyperparathyroidism...it causes bone loss..and could explain why you are sooo young with thinning bones..

Thank you all for your advice and information. I really do appreciate it. Wonder why the pharmacist didnt say anything to me about taking Fosamax?? I am due to take it tomorrow and now I dont want to. I will keep you guys posted, I am going to call my Dr. Monday and find out what the heck is going on with me. Do you just have blood work done for thyroid tests?? If so I have had that tested before when I took diet pills. Also could Phentermine have caused this?? Just wondering sorry for all the ?'s but this is really worrying me. Again thank you all!!!

I DID SOME READING ABOUT PHENTERMINE..COULD NOT FIND WHERE BONE LOSS IS ASSOCIATED TO ITS USE..BUT I AM OF THE BELIEF THAT ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE WHEN IT COMES TO THESE MEDICATIONS..YOU MITE WANT TO CALL THE DRUG COMPANY THAT MAKES PHENTERMINE AND ASK IF THEY ARE AWARE OF ANY LINK BETWEEN THE TWO.......

Hi.......sure am glad to hear I am not alone or just imaging this pain. YES...I too have painful hips when I sleep on my sides. Pain will waken me if I roll on my sides in the night, so my sleep is limited. I hurt all over and have a tough time doing anything at all. I am 56, diagnosed severe ostio last year. Believe the t score to be -2.5 with a dex scan. I have taken thyroid & dilantin meds for 30 years adding prednisone (10 mg)& Arara (20 mg) per day last April for artheritis.
Dr. insists I take Fosomax but I am scared to death to add another drug. I asked him for HRT and all he said was "You wouldn't take it when i offered it before" with no explanation on why he wouldn't start me on it now. I asked 5 times, nothing. I'm just about ready to call it a life, take something for pain and sleep forever. Maybe starting Fosomax will take care of that for me...today depression has a hold, tomorrow may be different. Everyday is painful.

i have heard that prednisone can cause bone loss..i have a friend that was on it and while she was taking it she was on fosama to prevent bone loss ...as far as hrt..like prempro...its an individual choice but i am scared to death of it..i have a friend who didnt like having hot flashes..so she wanted prempro..a year later she had a cancerous lump removed from her breast......have you thought about evista...its supposed to stop bone loss and not have the risk of breast cancer assoiciated to it..ofcourse it has its own set of possible side effects..but thats true of all meds...to me its like pick your poison....as for your t score i dont think -2.5 is severe osteoperosis..as i understand it -2.5 is the beginning of osteoperosis..-2.4 and less is called osteopenia which is the precursor to osteoperosis...if you dont do weight bearing exercises you should...

Do you happen to know of a web site that lists T scores and meanings by chance? My good lord but I hope your correct on the T score numbers!
Prednisone robs your bones of calcium is what my rhuemy doctor told me and from what I have read that's true. Prednisone makes the pain of arthritis go away..unfortunately it makes Osteoporosis worse.I want off the prednisone (now at 2 mg per day) regardless of the arthritis pain and against my doctors wishes. I started Viactiv last month. That's a little chewy calcium + d & k, drnking milk, calcium pill at night as the calcium pills do not agree with my bowels. Exercise (weight bearing or otherwise) is almost impossable for me. I can bearly walk across the room.
What are weight bearing exercises anyway? Is that lifting or pushing up weights?
The way Fosamax works is.....it stops the ostiocalsts from working. Your bones "shed" and rebuild bone much like your skin. The bone it gets rid of is pretty frail useless bone but Fosamax stops that so that useless bone is left and more useless bone builds up makeing the bone denser. The bone that results is really no stronger, just thicker. Like ash, it is just a thick ash, both not much better then before and it only lasts for a few years before your right back to the beginning. Your T score improves...theres more (useless) bone but at what cost? Evista is worse, doctor won't even go there. I want help I don't want to disregard *good meds. Any idea why he won't start me on HRT? I'm new here and scared...

i dont know of a web site that lists t score info tho i am sure there are sum..the info i gave you is right off of my bone density reports from the dr so i am positive of it..also you said that evista is worse that fosamax..please tell me in detail if you can why..i am going to the dr on monday and want to have my facts ready to discuss it intelligently......

Hi,
I'm not taking Fosamax but am taking Actonel 35mgs. a week. Both of these drugs are called bisphosphosonates.(Big word) Anyway I have gone on to the Actonel site and read the report on studies that were done before the drug was released.
Bottom line is the bone that is built with the aid of these drugs and calcium supplements is NORMAL BONE, not FRAGILE or BRITTLE.
So even though I hate the idea of having to take any drug, at least this info. makes it a little easier and in my case necessary.
Good luck,
TCML
