My wife had a bone density scan about a month ago and the male technician stressed the fact that osteoporosis strikes men as well as women. She insisted that I be tested, and guess what? I've got osteopenia (sp?)and took my first weekly dose of Fosamax this morning. (No side effects, so far)
This is not just a women's disease. Get your fellas scanned today!

By the way, I should mention I'm (only) 46 years old, in excellent health and have never had any other health problems.

about 18 months ago i spoke with the makers of fosamax...one of the things i learned is that it was clinical trialed on post menopausal women and it was approved by the fda on the basis of those trials..to me that says that its safety and effectiveness have not been established for men..why dont you give merck a call and see if that is still the case..why make yourself a guinea pig

First, let me say that I'm not here to promote Fosamax, or any other drug for that matter. However, I've done a little bit of research on my own, and there have been some studies that showed the effectiveness of this drug in men.
Of course, everybody has to make their own decisions about what, if any, drugs to take. I feel comfortable with my decision to take it weighed against the ongoing damage caused by doing nothing.
I have also increased my calcium intake and will be doing more walking and weight-bearing exercises at the gym.
I think the most important thing is to get tested and start doing something about the problem early.
