About the Liquid Calcium and Magnesium. You say you take it twice a day. I think you said that?
I now understand our bodies can't absorb more than about 300 mgs at a time. And, unless we want expensive urine (!) we should not take as much as 1,200 mgs at a time, which is the single dose of one tablespooon of Liquid Calcium (Innovative Natural Foods) we both take.
I have been adapting my night dosage, depending on how much I take during the day. But I was very happy taking the one tablespoon altogether at night, when needed. But not so sure now.
What's your take on this?
Big sigh, who can take all these small amounts during the day?!! I know one can take bigger dosages of calcium carbonnate, but that makes one constipated and
is not supposed to be so good as citrate, especially for those with delicate stomachs like mine.

Opp,
Check the dosage on the bottle. This is liquid so the lower dosage reflects the fact that almost 99% is absorbed. You don't need as much (it is the second figure that you look at). The recommendation is to take 1 TBL once a day or 1 TBL twice a day if you have Osteopenia or Osteoporosis. I have been taking it twice a day but (within the last week)I have been skipping a few days here and there and only taking 1 TBL. at night. This is an intuitive thing and the fact that all my nails are now very strong again.
You in fact might be taking more than you need if you are taking both the Innovative and your other calcium.

I am trying to take care not to take too much calcium, and I do count how much I take. Some doctors say you can go to 2,000 mgs/day but I take 1800 highest, I think.

My doctor has me taking 1000 mgs of calcium carbonate twice a day. One pill in the a.m. and one in the pm. If I am losing most of that in my urine, I would like to show my doctor the info about only being able to absorb a lesser amount. Is there any info on the internet or elsewhere that anyone knows of that I could print out and take to my next appointment?

Same here. Actually I thought it was 500 mg at a time. Would like to find some clinical, professional research on this. It is imperative that we are taking the calcium properly, or what good is it?? A lot of the OTC brands, mine including, are 500 and 600 mg.

I found alot of info in a book by Miriam E.Nelson P.H.D.
She is an associate professor of nutrition at Tufts University.
In the book she states that ...The body can not readily absorb large doses of calcium(over 500 milligrams at once)spread your calcium consumption- both food and supplements over the day.

I am so glad you started this thread. There are so many options out there, that at times it becomes mind boggling.
I think that so much is based on individual diets, lifestyle, medical condition, etc.
Here is a site (NIH ORBD~NRC - Nutrition and the Skeleton) that quotes a study that says that absorption and calcium balance play a role in bone health, but calcium excretion showed to be more important. This is something we have some control over by the choices we make, such as reducing sodium in our diets or not consuming so much animal protein.
(Osteoporosis Foundation of New Mexico) is another site that tells you the absorption rate of different types of calcium supplements, although it lists some antacids that are no longer recommended. I also think that these absoption rates have to be based on optimal conditions, since we all have factors that would affect our own rate of absorption

There's quite a lot I've posted on the subject of calcium and it's worth going back a bit and doing some research. Just back from vacation, so no time to research now.
SFO Steve, calcium carbonnate may make you constipated and it is easier to take because you can take more at one go, but I think you will find it is not as effective as calcium citrate, for example, which has to be taken in small amounts thru the day, a big drag but worth while. I take my last dose at night, just before bed, when I have been told it is more effective, something my doctor didn't tell me!
You can tell your doctor you want to take the 24 hour urine test, which is inexpensive, and the calcium D absorb test, which I just took, and found I am low on Vit D. I am trying to spend a little more time in the sun, something I've avoided forever! Well, at least 15 mins.
