Hi folks,
Can you please tell me what the symptoms of Osteoporosis are? I am trying to figure out what my problems are. I have had a lot of pain in my heels and knees and also burning in my thighs for the last year and a half. I was diagnosed with Plantar fascitis but physical therapy has not helped at all. The pain only seems to be increasing. Does this sound like something you went through before your diagnosis of Osteoporosis?
Thanks a lot and wish you all good health.

From the National Osteoporosis Foundation website:
"Osteoporosis is often called the "silent disease" because bone loss occurs without symptoms. People may not know that they have osteoporosis until their bones become so weak that a sudden strain, bump or fall causes a fracture or a vertebra to collapse. Collapsed vertebrae may initially be felt or seen in the form of severe back pain, loss of height, or spinal deformities such as kyphosis (stooped posture)."

When someone i know was first detected, it was as a result of a simple fall
She was 54 and just fell over as you can sometimes whilst walking. Her ankle swelled up and within a few days would not settle down. An X ray revealed a spiral fracture of the ankle
They recommended a bons density scan and that revealed the Osteoporosis. Before then she had no sympthoms

Usually the first symptom is a fracture otherwise many women run around with osteo right now and don't know it and won't til they have a bone density test or a fracture.

Hello,
I was experiencing a lot of pain in my hips when I decided to finally have a bone scan test and it showed some bone loss in my hip. I stepped up my calcium intake along with other supplements, and the pain subsided/improved. There are usually small subtle signs like pain and difficulty in movement that could be the startup. Pay attention to these signs.
Hope that helps!

Cathy....it was the pain in my hips that made me realize to....something was wrong. I have been on Miacalcin, Caltrate and a multivitamin and tons of yoga and weight lifting. I still have the pain....and with cold weather setting in it is worse....last night was the worst in over a year. Maybe I need to see a rheumtologist. Did you see one for your pain?
I was dignosed kinda accidently after a car wreck the doc noticed how "sheer" my bones were thus I got the bone density and flunked!
I tried the fosamax first and it made me sick as a dog!

hey guys i have a question regarding symptoms......
6 months back i had a lot of backpain and went to the chiropractor and was found to have a pinched nerve, some bones out of alignment and with therapy it all went away..I had a lot of anxiety and lost weight so I was thinner. Thing is by now I have gained most of the weight but I noticed even tho im about the same weight my watch fits very loose (wrist)where it was very tight before. Im scared this could be a sign of ostopenia. Back when the chiro did the x-rays (6 months back) i told him to also check for osteporosis because I took a strong medication that can lead to early osteoporosis but he said back then it was no sign of any of that. To be honest I am quite scared. I have a large frame but my bones are thin has always been. Im about to thing of doing that bone density test but Im not sure if Im being a bit too paranoid. What you guys think?

Hey Nightangel - I believe that with osteoporosis the bones are still the same size, they just have a lower mineral density. But get it checked out anyway if you are concerned - good luck to you -
