I was diagnosed with osteoporosis in my hip and osteopenia in my spine. I am in shock since I have worked out with weights for about 9 yrs. and taken calcium for about 2 yrs. I am 52 and just stopped having periods last Jan. My dr. put me on HRT last week.
I'm wondering if I should get a physical therapist to show me exactly which excercises I should be doing for osteo. Or should I get a personal trainer? I've been taking calcium carbonate and have just found out I should be taking calcium citrate.
My dr. wants me to take Fosamax but I don't want to. My mother had chest pain and almost an ulcer from it.
Any help, advice would be so appreciated. I feel lost and panicky!

Fosamax - my sometimes walking partner takes it and has no problems with it but she takes it EXACTLY as directed. She takes it once a week and on an empty stomach and keeps herself in an upright position. She tells me her osteoporosis is not getting worse since she's been on Fosamax. The HRT should help your osteoporosis from getting worse also.

I understand your shock, I'm 54 and was diagnosed at 50, I thought I was doing it all right, exercise, I'm a dairy freak, take extra calcium and yet I have osteo in the spine and hips now. Taking actenol and so far so good, some upset tummy now then but not always. I walk the treadmil(bad weather days)35 to 50 minutes 5 days a week, I use the incline to 10% for half the treadmill walk, lift weights but my Dr said some times you can do all the right things but still be predisposed to the condition. My mother is 73 and has no osteo and in fact her bones are better than mine. Whatever, you need to consider taking something, the first year I tried to do it my way, diet and exercise, I had osteo in the spine and osteopenia in the hips, after that first year my bone scan showed osteo in hips as well and 10% more bone loss in the spine, I had to stop fooling myself and take the drug(I hate to take meds)I don't want to end up like my grandmother, bed ridden from it.

Oh as far as exercises for osteo, anything that is weight bearing, walking, running, weight lifting, climbing, anything that puts the bones to the test.

I WORK FOR AN OSTEOPOROSIS SPECIALIST, AND HE SWEARS THAT FOSAMAX AND ACTONEL ARE BETTER ABSORBED IF TAKEN WITH DISTILLED WATER.

Ya know, my osteo said to take mine with bottled water, not mentioning it versus tap water, interesting bit of information. I take it with filtered water anyway.

OK...now you have me curious....what is the reasoning for taking it with distilled or bottled water? I have been on Actonel, but only for a month. I take it once a week and so far have had no problems, following all the instructions re: empty stomach, upright for 30 mins. etc. anyway, just curious about the water thing....I always want to know the 'whys'...?? http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/confused.gif

Well my Dr said it but I never inquired as to why, next time I see him I'll ask, tho maybe it is just a preference.

I'm 40 and already showing signs of bone loss. I forget the numbers, but from the bone density scan, they said my bones are like those of a 55 year old.
I've taken calcium supplements all my life, and been a heavy milk drinker as well. No risk factors other than heredity... but that seems to take precedence over all my good intentions. :(
If, after a year has gone by, my bones show more deterioration, I'm told I need to go on fossemax. :(
I REALLY don't want to do that. All drugs have weird side effects on me.

I got to tag along on this thread.
My guess about the water is that tap water generally has chlorine in it and bottled water dosen't.
May I ask why you are avoiding this bone healing medicine?
What bad side effects are you getting?
I'm interested in the bone density/Fosamax subject.
