I am exploring the possible connections among sleep, allergies, and adhd. Recent research indicates sleep apnea may also be connected to ADHD behaviors. Why wouldn't allergies, which can disturb breathing, which can disturb sleep, lead to adhd behaviors?
My ds, age 7, has had seasonal allergies since toddlerhood. He was diagnosed last year with adhd. However, he has also had night terrors since he was 9 mos old (they have diminished in frequency as he has aged). His adhd behaviors definitely worsen when he's tired...so I think there may very well be a connection among these 3 syndromes.
Anyone think likewise?

Kris, this is a relatively new area for research. In my own opinion, there seems to be a strong connection between sleep deprivation (whatever its source) and an increase or exacerbation of ADHD like symptoms. Most clients that I see, with or without ADHD, have fewer problems when they sleep longer and more soundly. Sleep deprivation can be caused by a simple lack of time or a lack of quality. Sleep apnea and chronic conditions (like allergies, night terrors, etc.) that consistently interfere with the various stages of sleep can also be a serious source of sleep deprivation over time.
Close monitoring is advised with adjustments to sleep patterns as necessary.

When Z is suffering from (chronic seasonal) allergies, his ADD/ADHD symptoms are worse. When he doesn't get enough sleep, it's worse. When he's mildly down or depressive, it's worse. When he doesn't watch his diet, it's worse. When his chemical balance changes due to a growth spurt, it's worse.
Certainly there are correlations on an individual basis. I remember reading some study about the sleep apnea/ADD link. If I can find it, I'll post the link.
