Hi,
I'm new to the boards...but, think it's Great that it's here!
I've been doing pain meds for 18 months and for the most part, I have to be stingy because I get so nauseous when I take them that I can't move. My pain has increased past the darvocet 2 pill level long ago, but vicodin makes me so nauseous, it's a dilemma between pain or p*king. :(
I've tried codeine, tylenol 3, percocet...all make me very sick. Of course, because of the pain, I don't have much of an appetite to be taking meds with food. I'm frustrated and hurting and don't where to turn next.
Any ideas, suggestions....?
Thanks

Hey!
here's an idea, i don't know if it will help, but
i am on nexium. its a stomach med, much like prilosec
in fact, it has prilosec in it plus something???????/
anyway, i take it for ulcers/acid reflux, when i don't
take it and try to take the pain meds, its awful!!!!!!
i know how you feel, also if you can get your doc, to
prescibe mepergan,it will not make you sick, it will
make you sleepy, but it has demerol and phenergan and
of course can't forget the acetamenophin its also in
mepergan. but its one of the stronger ones....
so many reg docs won't prescibe it... my doc just put
me on kadian. i don't know how it works yet, they
had to order it.
i've got ddd, re-rupture at L-5 S-1, had surgery a year
and 3 months ago, and i am worse off, now my neuro is
talking fusion, and i refuse.
sorry for being so long winded, but if anyone else
has had experiences with kadian, please post to
charmin!
thanks alot!!

If your doctor was willing to try you on Percocet then he/she should be willing to let you give the Duragesic Patch a try. I've read where others went to it because they had the same problems you have. It's a good long-acting pain reliver(48-72hrs)that absorbs into your blood system.
I hope you are able to find something that will work for you if not the patches. I know what it's like to hurt really bad and the thought of not being able to take something for it really makes my heart go out to you! BestWishes and Goodluck!

Hi OMAB, I like your Handle. Have you tried any of the lng acting meds yet. They cut back the ups and downs and the punch that short acting meds have. Duragesic patches do indeed bypass the gut so they may be a great choice ofor you. Neasea is a common side efect that usually gets better with time. Merpergan although a good pain med, should really be avoided due to the build up of metabolites from demerol. It can cause seizure and other problems when taken long term. It's just not one that PM docs use. Other opiates that don't cantain Tylenol would be a better choice. Sorry cwest, nothing personal Demerol is just the one free opiate that shouldn't be used long term.
Kadian is a great choice because the release is so smooth. I have been taking it for a year and I have never felt it kick in or wear off. It's the longest lasting oral med, up to 24 hours but most take it twice a day. Evan after 3 years on strong opiates I still use phenergan as needed, You can't always take your meds with food so it's not a bad adjunct med to have around.
There are a few other meds that help with Nausea so don't give up. Some folks are very sensitive to dose increases and titration to the point of comfort may take longer but in the end it's well worth it.Welcome and I hope you find the answer your looking for. Take care, David

To: The Rock, Davidc66,
Thanks to you both for your reply. I appreciate the duragesic suggestion! It seems my stomach goes on strike with anything...however, my dr sent me home with Ultram 50mg (generic Tramadol), although it doesn't take away most of the pain...it takes the edge off. Of course, I'll see my dr soon for post op visit and the patch will be the first order of business! Appreciate the help. :-) Oh~

Hello,
I have been through alot in the 2 years since I was involved in a construction accident, that has left me in much pain that has only been getting worse. I was readytopullthepin but my living situation has changed, along with my telephone service. They both went away, but one good thing I have found about Indiana, the libraries have free internet access! My biggest problem now is not having a head rest, and arm rest to use while surfing, but will make do. I take methadone for my pain problems, and it makes me sick. I use a motion sickness patch to control the nausea called transderm scop it contains 1.5 mg scopolamine that lasts for 3 days. I cut them in half to keep me form sleeping all of the time. It works well at controling that "which way to the toilet" sensation, but it does give me heart burn, for which I take pepcid. God bless

Igottabigpainintheneck!!! (I love that!) :) Your last one was good too!
Thanks for the suggestion. My nausea has calmed some now and the dr is willing to work with me finding something suitable. Hope you are doing well and your pain is "bearable". Take care. Oh~
