Any of those drugs might be used to treat ADD. What works for one person may not work for another person. If your doctor prescribes one medication and it doesn't seem to be helping with your ADD then you need to let the doctor know so they can try something else. The only way a doctor know if medication is working or not is by what you tell them.

All those medications can be used for both. I personally think adderall is the best.

Well we tried just about everything and nothing worked until I switched pediatricians. I took my 4yr. old son who has been diagnosed with ADHD by a psychologist and a psychiatrist. His last Dr. really never did anything for him. Everything he prescribed made it worse. So I took him to a pediatrician who specializes in this. He's an expert with kids who have this. He told me to still continue the concerta 36ml. from last Dr. along with clonidine. He started off taking one ml. of clonidine before bedtime for one week, then second week clonidine in the morning with the concerta and at bedtime too. This is really working!! What a big difference this makes. My husband and I can actually take him places now and he behaves himself. We always had to hire a sitter before. I'm so proud of him. I've also heard that Dr's are experimenting with other new drugs as well. We'll just have to wait and see. But for now, concerta works great with clonidine. The two drugs balance each other out and no side effects either!!!
Wonderful!!

I guess the most important thing to remember is that everyone's body chemistry reacts to things differently. My son was diagnosed with ADD (not ADHD) about a year ago and was promptly put on Ritalin. Within a day his teachers and I saw an amazing difference in his ability to sit still and do his work. Before he'd be distracted by every little thing. It's been a year now, and I've seen no side effects to speak of. His appetite went down a bit and he lost about 5-10lbs the first few months, but he was a touch overweight at that point anyway. I'm not really sure, but I think he's got a normal appetite now....you can DEFINATELY tell when he's going through a growth spurt :) Plus, I just realized last week...I guess because he'd been on it for so long now I was getting lax with his meds. Didn't worry if he didn't take it over the weekend. Then I started making sure he took it on the weekend too...I actually didn't have to tell him a half a dozen times to do something before he moved. Now, being almost ten, I STILL had to tell him 2 or 3 times, but...I figure THAT'S normal for the age :)
Oh, and after having just checked, as I said, my son was diagnosed a year ago, and is almost ten now, and he takes one 10mg tablet of Ritalin (methylphenidate HCL) twice a day. One with breakfast around 7:15am, and the other at lunch, around 11:45am. I think these tablets are supposed to take a half an hour to kick in, and last for about 4 hours. He doesn't take a dose after school, because we look at the meds as a way to help him get through school mostly, and if I can't handle him for a few hours after school...mind you, like I said, on the weekends, I don't like having to spend a whole day with him not taking his medication...basically because he doesn't do what I ask him to unless I've said it a half a dozen times (no exageration), and then start to get mad and yell and threaten to get/call/tell his dad.

Now I have found with myself that I would often get side effects from the generic version of a med but not name brand. Or I got a side effect from Dexidrine spatials (capsule) but not the tablet. So it can sometime be trial and error

BUT......what about the kids who have ADD, NOT ADHD? How is taking them off sugar going to help? There is a big difference between ADD and ADHD. I don't want my son on meds either and we have tried almost everything.

I still don't understand why anyone would want to cut sugar out of their diet altogether. Your brain and body need/run off sugar.

Carbohydrates turn into sugar. That will supply enough sugars for the brain, also when my son had this, I would allow a treat once a day, important to him. He didn't have ADHD just ADD and the meds. didn't help him, he tried a couple of diff. things. What I found helped the most was a good B-vit Complex three times a day. I could tell if he hadn't taken it http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/bang.gif Might be worth a try, for some ADD's this vit. is very low in the system. Diana :)

Here is an interesting link to a dietician's website that discusses the ADD/sugar issue.

Thank you Wendyhud for that info. Yes, I'm very careful about these meds. He has a very good pediatrician, he knows alot about add & adhd. He's also the medical director at the hospital. This middle aged doctor is a geru on add & adhd. His last pediatrician did not know really anything about it. So I took him to this doctor whose an expert. I've had really good luck so far. Next time I take my son in to see him, I will ask him if he should have a blood test done for any kind of liver problems. I know he would complain of a tummy ache with his concerta, but the nurse told me to give it to him after he eats his breakfast, and he should be okay then. So I did, and everything is okay so far. I still keep an eye out on him and make sure he's monitored by his doctor. Any side effects, I report to his doctor immediately or call the office and speak to the nurse.

Dear Wendyhud, when I took my son in today to see his pediatrician, I asked him if he should have a blood test for any liver problems and he said no. He said that he didn't need one. Did your child have serious side affects with clonidine? Maybe when you reported this to you sons nurse or pediatrician, they found out about the liver problems then. So far my son hasn't had any side affects at all with clonidine. I even think his appetite has improved after he was put on it. Before he was underweight, but lately he has gained 3 and a half pounds. I was amazed at that. Cuz he always had a hard time gaining weight. If he would have any side effects with this drug, then he could very well have a liver problem & would be taken off right away. So far this has not happened & he's been on it for about 3 weeks now. I know that he can't take ritalin, cuz his heart beats fast & so does his pulse. He'll also talk extremely fast. The dr. took him off of it right away. He's just on concerta & clonidine now.
