that my doctor wants me to do a 24 hour urine collection, so i went to the clinic and they gave me this big tub and said "pee in this every time that you have to go for 24 hours" she said to start tomorrow morning at 7:00am. and continue until 7:00am. on friday and she said to keep the big container in the fridge, and then bring it back there on friday. I have no idea why my doctor wants me to have this done? the nurse didn't even know! well i guess i'll try anything just to find out what's wrong with me (and it's not mentally like the doctor's think) GRRRR! (well maybe some of it is , like the anxiety because of being in pain for 24 hours and for so long would make anyone go insane) Kim

Sounds like they are doing some real medical tests. I think that is a great sign. Not just passing you off to a shrink.
The shrink thing is common. As I said, pain is mentally exhausting. Plus, it is a way to rule out drug seekers and head cases. They don't know you, so don't be insulted. It is part of their ruling things out process. Who couldn't use a little emotional support for the pain. The strain of CP is pretty bad.

Thats where I'm at with a DR I saw. After a ten min visit she decided that its all in your head. So that stresses you out. But now you don't dare show it cause thats playing right into their hands. So you have to keep all this bottled up inside you. Tomorrow I go see my family DR. I don't know what good it will do as he doesn't do my pain meds he feels pain is our friend. I wish all of our friends could go live with him for awhile. He does my "psych" drugs and stuff like Celebrex. I feel like screaming from all this. How do you prove pain? How do you prove that what you are telling the DR is what you really feel? I hurt!!!! My hands hurt!!!! Now that its gotten cold here they really hurt. Can't get my pain drugs upped cause then it will look like I'm out for the narcs. :( !!!!!! Damn (sorry) how do you make them listen? Shove you in and out the office time for another patient. The last visit I had with my pain DR lasted about 3 min. Sign this, go to the lab, here's your meds bye. Sorry I went on with the rant and rave there. Its so hard to get DR to understand how we feel. Just cause they have a fancy paper on the wall all of a sudden they know how you feel and think cause some book told them so. If there is a book out there written about how I think and feel I think I should be getting some royalty money, or some kind of money from it.

Your right if you ask for pain med's then they think that your just after the narcotic's. My primary doctor told me that she doesn't want to give me any more pain med's because she doesn't want me to become addicted (even tho i'm crying in extreme pain).
I have even begged her to send me to a neurologist just to cut the nerves or something so then i don't feel anymore pain. (now does that sound like someone who is only after narcotic's?) i just want pain relief!!!!!! It's very, very frustrating! I wish that there was a way that the doctor's could feel our pain, man i would sure like to give it to her! So i have no pain med's now and i am literally having a nervous breakdown because of the pain, and no help.

What kind of drs. do you have? Perhaps you have mentioned in earlier post(s) that I have not read. If you are not going to a pain mgmt. dr, you might want to try one of them. If your ins. insists on having a referral to one from your family dr., would they give you one? If not, tell your dr. all you do is think about killing yourself because you can no longer deal with the pain. That usually gets their attn and helps them understand you ARE in pain.
If they say you need to see a shrink after you say that instead of prescribing something better, many shrinks are willing to prescribe narcotics because they specialize in managing patients who take many meds. The reason I know this is that recently when I approached my pain mgmt. dr. about switching from Zoloft (originally prescribed by another dr. and presently prescribed by this dr.), he said he felt uncomfortable prescribing a different antidepressant and that he would give me the name of a physicatrist to go see.
At the time, I thought he felt I had mental problems and said, I would try my thyroid dr. who prescribes many of my other meds. She told me she felt uncomfortable doing it also and recommended I go see an internist. I went to see the internist she recommended and she said she was uncomfortable too and that I needed to see a physicatrist because antidepressants effect your brain and interact differently with other meds and she was recommending I see a physicatrist to manage my meds, not because she thought I had mental problems.
If all else fails, just keep trying other drs. until you find one that is compassionate and understanding. I had a great dr. willing to try various meds to treat my Fibromylgia until we found the right combination that worked for me. Unfortunately, she moved out of state and I was left in limbo going from dr. to dr. who all had different theories of how to treat Fibro. The only thing that took the ting off my pain was Ultram, Soma and Zoloft, but none of the drs. would prescribe Ultram and would try me on other meds that made me very dopey and didn't do anything for my pain or would want me to take Vicodin, which I know is not what you want to take for long term pain.
Finally, by going to a Fibro seminar and hearing a speech by a pain mgmt. dr. who treated cancer patients, as well as Fibro patients for chronic pain, I was able to hook up with a pain mgmt. dr. near my office who treated Fibro patients. He tried me on morphine which worked for 1 month and then stopped working. He then doubled the dose, but I had trouble staying awake at work and while driving and could not function very well at work.
At that point, he said that although he didn't know me that long, but knew I had been seeking treatment for 7 yrs. for my pain and felt I was sincerely in bad pain and appeared to be someone who wanted to continue working full time and being functional, he offered to implant a pain pump so I could have continuous meds pumped into my spine round the clock. I am so grateful and blessed to have found such a wonderful dr. willing to give me a pain pump. It has given me my life and sanity back and taken away most of my pain.
If you don't know much about the pain pumps, it is made by Medtronics and they have a website that would be worth taking the time to check out.

This is my pain management DR. I get 5mg Percocet and the rest is whatever. My family DR thinks pain is our friend and tells us when we have done too much etc. Or it might mask the pain and we might further injure ourselves. This is my 2nd pain clinic I've gone to. Since I wasn't the ideal patient and was cured at the last instead of looking into whatever other options there might be I was told don't come back. This one I'm going to has nothing to offer but what little drugs they do give me. All I want, what we all want, is a little relief. I'm sorry I didn't mean to take over your post here. :( I'm really happy :) for you. At least your DR is starting to try and figure out what they can do to give you some relief.

I think some of the people on here are a little misinformed about the use of opiods as pain medications. It is not bad to need opiods.
I have used methadone for over 5 years and have been on the same dosage. I have never been called an addict or a drug seeker. I've been to a number of doctors during this periods and never have been questioned about the use of pain meds.
When a doctor asks for a 24-hour urine collection usually it is to look at liver and kidney functions - not to check for illicit drug use. They can do a simple blood test if that's their suspicions.
I spent as have others here several years looking for pain relief, asking questions about drugs and dosages is a way to find out what others have used.
Sorry about my first posting being a rant but there have been several mistaken comments here and it pushed my buttons. I am sure none of the posters meant to accuse others but the tones sure sounded like it to me.
I am 60 yrs old have been in chronic sever pain for at least 15 years and on some type of prescription med all of that time
