I need help. I suffer from chronic severe pain from wide spread tumors in which I am being treated with ms-contin and ms-IR. It is not providing pain relief. I notice no change in my pain intensity. Now I used to go to the hospital for short term help, but my PM doc told me I am no longer to go to the hospital. They said it was self-medication. But sometimes the pain is SOOO BAD I am screaming and crying. What should I do?. I'm in pain but I feel I cant go to the hospital for relief. I'm fairly positive that a good shot of 60mg toradol would decrease the attacks. But I would get in trouble with the pm. I'm sooo trapped and I feel alone...I dont like the morphine it makes me sick and constipated. I know Ill be in pain all my life, but I dont want to be on morphine all my life. I just want pain relief. Does fentanyl have lesser nausea?....Anyone who can help....

also anyone on toradol please tell me out the tab form works.

Call you PM doctor and tell him what's going on. If he dosen't help you get some relief go to the ER and start looking for a PM doctor that gives a crap, they are out there but hard to find. It's just outrageous that your having to go through this.

Sorry but I cannot help you on the meds. I take Oxycontin & Oxycodone IR and it does pretty good for me but I'm looking to change meds. The abuse of oxycontin has become so bad that those that use it as it was intended are scrutinized beyond belief, I don't think it will be around much longer. It's also expensive, about $500 per month, the drug company is making billions a year for a patent not on the drug, but it's easily defeated time release matrix.

I wish you the best of luck.

Backdraft, Fentanyl is appox. 20 times stronger than the MScontin and MSir your on now. Doctors are more apt to prescribe Fentanyl for pain now because it comes in patch form so it is hard to abuse. I think Fentanyl would give you much pain relief! The next step is you asking your doctor! Good Luck!!

Thanks, Yes fentanyl would be a good thing to try. Its actually 900 time stronger than morphine. The doc was going to try that but they wanted to try MS first. It works but Igotta take quite abit to decrease pain levels.

hopefully duragesic would be our next step. Im sick of all the pills.

Backdraft, 900 times stronger? Come on...your pulling Karloff's leg....aren't you? So if your taking 60mgs of MSir you would have to take almost 60,000 mgs to equal fentanyl's power?

Wow that is strong...I take 20mg Oxycontin 2x a day with oxy IR for breakthrough and 2 mg Dilaudid at bedtime and the Dilaudid is pretty strong itself thats why I take it at bedtime for the relief so I can sleep. The patch would be a good idea I hate taking pills myself you get a sore throat after awhile at least I do.

I just had a general fentanyl question-not really related to this. I have been given fentanyl in the past for anesthesia during surgery. I had it when I had my wisdom teeth removed and then when I had a D&C. They gave me an injection of it, but for some reason it didn't work for me. I went through the entire procedure waiting for it to kick in and send me to dreamland. I didn't feel any effects, although the nurses said it would knock me out. I have had CP for a long time, and have been on opiate therapy for years. I am pretty tolerant, and I was wondering if that is the reason the fentanyl didn't work. Does anyone know about this??

I have never heard of fentanyl being used as the ONLY med for anesthesia during medical procedures. "Counscious Sedation" is usually a combination of at least two drugs a pain med (fentanyl, demerol etc) and a sedative (versed, valium etc). I think if they gave you enough fentanyl to "knock you out", opiate tolerant or not, that would be an OD, not anesthesia. The last time I had anesthesia I was given a shot of fentanyl for pain control that made me feel heavy/weird, but it was the dose of propofol that came next that actually put me to sleep.

I encourage you to find out exactly what and how much you were given for your prior sedations. That information will be very useful to you in the future if you need anesthesia. If you are able to tell the anesthesiologist what DIDN'T work you have a much better chance of having a successful sedation in the future!
