I seen my neuro-surg today.I have been under his care for a little over a year.He just in the last 4 months finally movd me up to Lortab 10,every 8-12 hours. Before that it was Loracet Plus 7.5.Well I told him today that there was to much of a lapse.I didn't ask for anything stronger, just maybe every 6 hours would help.He started babbling about how addictive they were, and blah blah blah...I said well I guess I would rather be addicted than in constant pain!! He said refer her to Dr.SO and SO for a PM consult. They may put you on methadone. What in the heck is that? I thought that it was for people DT'ing. He did give me my 90 pills, with 1 refill until I can get to see the PM doc.I just wonder what will happen when I go to see this Doc.What should I tell the PM doc? My Neuro has me paranoid now. What should I do? My gosh my 90 a month was better than nothing.
Thanks guys

hi!I don't understand why all these dr.'s go on about addiction. Personally I don't feel that there is such thing as addiction in peolpe that are in pain all the time. No one should have to live in pain when there is so much out there to help. Methadone is not just used for d'ting. It is also used for people in pain.

Make sure your dr. monitors your closely while you are usind the methadone

take care and I hope you can get some pain relief real soon.

Huntingfor, ask your Dr. about trying MScontin(Morphine Sulfate Continuous release)or Oxycontin(Oxycodone Continuous release) both are long lasting(8-12hrs) and will give you extended pain relief! Its good to have options...don't let your Doctors push methodone on you if you don't feel comfortable with it! Good Luck!

Thanks for the replies!
I have been researching methadone, and found out it is a VERY strong narcotic!
Not something I am wanting.
I am satisfied with my Lortab 10,I just need it more often.I don't get complete relief with it,but it makes things tolerable.I just wanted to go from every 8 hours to every 4-6 hours.
Should I tell PM doc this???
Thanks again.

Let him know what works best for YOU. We are all individuals with different types of pain. Yes, you can get addicted, or build up a tolerance. But not as badly as those taking just for recreation. The problem, even with those with chronic pain is that eventually you need more to get the same pain relief.
Don't let him talk you into Methodone if you are not comfortable with it!

Dear GoodGirl, We, of the chronic pain brother and sisterhood do not get addicted to our pain medication! Addiction is a mental sickness...it involves searching and craving and doing illegal things for the drug of choice! We on the other hand are "Drug Dependant" if we go without medication we will go thru withdrawl but once its over we will not crave the medication! There are many case studies that show those suffering from chronic pain, only 5 in 1,000 cases would result in actual addiction! Diabetics need insulin...Chronic Pain sufferers need opiates.

Hi,
I am new here so please bear with me. You and I have the exact same problem. I have been on Lorcet 10/650 for 2 years. I went to a pain clinic (because I was tired of dealing with my doc. wife who was his front desk girl and felt it her job to dole out med. advice)Just for example, I have a herniated disc compressing the spinal cord, I fell, she told me to take an advil and deal with it!!! Anyway, I have been in a constant battle with the PM doctor. He insists on Oxycotin. I refused. Then he offered me the Fentyl (spelling) patch. I took it not knowing any better. Come to find out it is just as bad as oxycotin. I told him 3-4 times, Lorcet is just fine. I was looking to function, not be sedated. Now I don't know what to do. What became of your situation if you don’t mind me asking?

Pippin, I go the 14th to pain doc for evaluation.I will let you know how it goes.
Couple of ? for everyone.
1) They want me to tkae drivers license,is that normal? Why?
2) I read my neuro surg report saying that he believes I need methadone, not these short acting narcotics. Will the pain doc take this advice,or listen to me?
I really dont even want mscotin,or anything stronger than the lortab 10.I just need them every 6 hours instead of every 8.I live in KY and there has been soooo much controversy over oxycotin,I dont want near it.W/C is already watching me,I dont need the DEA watching as well.
Should I just tell him/her that at this time I am not ready to move to stronger narcotics?? Please any advice.
Thanks

You may be freightened but the longer term meds are very effective. I used to take 30mg of Lortab a day and one 10mg percoset at night. I wanted to get away from the large amounts of acetominophine in these drugs and was switched to 10mg Methodone 3 times a day. At first the side effects were bothersome (upset stomach, nervouisness, etc.) but they went away. The great thing is that I now sleep well and am not constantly thinking about when is my next dose. You get to a level of relief and you maintain it constantly. This was so much better for me. No more feeling sorry for myself because of pain... I got my life back.

Now here is the bad part. When taking the short term meds I would often stop when the pain was not great. You can not do this with methadone. You most go off it very slowly. I did not realize this and quit all at once. After the 5th day I realized I could not do that and talked to the doctor who was quite upset with me. It was one of the most unforgettable times of my life.
