If you took a survey of chronic pain patients you would probably find that most of them have tried many methods of pain relief other than narcotics. To many a "good" doctor is one who understands this and understands the pain that is lived with. Narcotics are not usually a first choice, they are a last resort.

I realize that. I've suffered over 12 years myself and have had eight surgeries - seven of which were unnecessary. It has only been the last three years that I have had a Pain Management Physician take over my case and treat me with various medications, including opiates. It just seems to me that there are quite a few that want to jump right for the narcotics. There was even one person that stated they weren't happy with Oxycontin because it only took the edge off the pain! Excuse me, but what else is it supposed to do? These medications are NOT supposed to be used to make one "feel good" they are supposed to be used to (atleast) take the edge off of the pain so that we might try to recover some semblance of our former lives. Many of us get defensive when we hear the kind of "talk" that has been going on here lately because we were near suicidal at one point. Individuals that take advantage of these medications and/or take them for reasons other than to alleviate SEVERE pain and regain some function, put those of us that need this medicine to survive in jeopardy. That's all I was getting at....

I'm sorry, but when my ****ing herniated disk flares up, the ONLY thing that helps the pain somewhat, and I DO mean SOMEWHAT, at least to be able to function, is NARCOTICS. Sorry, that's just how it IS. I ONLY take them when absolutely necessary, and only how many that is absolutely neccessary, thank you very much. Do you think we enjoy going around with freaking fog brains just to be able to function? I for one, DO NOT. But if it helps me get through until things calm down again, THEN GOD WILLING, that's what I'll DO. And NO, I DO NOT GET A "HIGH" off of them. They only take the pain down to a manageable level. I literally have a bottle of Darvocet sitting in my closet that I've had filled since 2001...jsut in case I have a flare up and cant' get to a doctor. Of course, my luck, the next flare-up wont' happen until the pills have expired and will do me no good anyway. LOL!! Hopefully I won't have any more severe flare-ups. But if I do, they're sitting in my closet waiting for me. Or expiring on me, whichever occurs first.

LOL!!!! ME TOO!
I have terrible trouble taking narcotics, so I don't, but I have my meds that that have made life doable that doctors don't like just like narcotics.
I put them in a drawer and challenge my creativity for pain control.
Well, it would appear that all my prudence has only earned me JAW PAIN now.
One of my doctors looked at me recently and told me that I had symptoms of poor pain control.
Imagine that.
