I am on morphine sulfate 15mg ER (MSCONTIN) and MSIR 15. I take the MS 3X a day on both products. I noticed that I have to take the IR with the base med to get sufficent pain control which is lowering the pain to a manageable level. I looked a a coversion site and it said 15mg of morphine is equal to 10 of oxycotin (mg wise). And 10mg of oxycodone has NEVER achieved pain control with me. Am I under medicated?. I mean Im afraid to tell my docs that I feel it should be stronger maybe 30mg. I do get relief but it takes me administering the IRs. I previously asking about kadian which is probably the smoothest and longest acting morphine product. Has anyone been switched to kadian from morphine?. If so can you give your experince?.

Thanks

Hi,
I've been taking Kadian (24 hour release) for the past five years for severe nerve pain/damage. Currently, I take 240 mgs. once daily combined with Tegretol 200 mgs. twice daily. It works great for me but, I have to also take a laxative and stool softener because Kadian causes severe constipation. My pain is totally controlled so that I hardly notice it anymore but, I think I've been having side effects for quite a while. (see posting from Waylin of 16.4.03). Kadian works but, I suggest talking to your doctor re: side effects. Hope this helps you.

Backdraft,, How long have you been on this dose? It may be that you are building up a tolerance. I take 100mg. 2x day of kadian. I am starting to have alot of breakthrough pain, I also take bextra once a day..

I would definitly say that you were on a low dose, as compared to some chronic pain pts. Maybe talk to your Dr to see if he can raise it until you acheive better pain control

Good Luck

Hi Backdraft,

Sorry, I forgot to mention that my Dr. put me on Statex 5 mg. for breakthrough. I hardly have had to use it, though in the last five years. The Kadian is that good. However, I still think you should talk to your Dr. about side effects. As well, I have found that when I'm unable to take pills because I'm throwing up for days, I think I start to get withdrawal symptoms and they are hideous!!! As well, I do think you are undermedicated as your dosage seems to be very small. Your Dr. may be acting a little cautious, as most do, when prescribing narcotics. In Canada, pharmacists are like the drug police and they closely monitor narcotics. So, talk to your Dr. and explain how you're feeling. He/she is there to help and should do so for you. Hope this helps you.
