My son is 5.5 and has been taking metadate CD 20 mg for about a month and a half and recently is having sleep issues. He went on a mini vacation with his grandparents last week and hasn't slept well since he returned home. He had two nights where he just couldn't sleep and the last few nights, he gets up in the middle of the night and goes into the living room and goes back to sleep on the couch. Part of me is relieved that he's sleeping but I need to break this habit before it goes too far. Any ideas? I started him on the Omega-3 and it is making a difference with his anxiety but now this sleep thing. Yikes.

Insomnia and sleep problems is one of the common side effects of this type of drug. You need to update your doctor and discuss this with him to decide what you would like to do. Always be sure to read the literature that comes with your medication so that you are aware of what the possible side effects are. You need to be aware of possible side effects of all medications so that you can catch them early and update the doc when you have side effects.

I have read the material on the medication and it is only in the last week or so that he's having trouble. He's been on the medication for almost two months with great results. I was just wondering if there is anything else that could be going on.

Since it takes between 2-4 weeks for the medication to really get into his system fully I would rather tend to think the medication is causing some of his problems but if not why not make an appointment with is psych doc and the three of you can discuss this issue and try to figure out what is going on.

It's the medication. Children need their proper sleep even more than us adults. Get him off it before other health issues arise in the future....but always taper it slowly because it would be dangerous to just quit, even if he has only been taking it for 2 months. The effects can be cumulative; maybe even taking years but by then it's too late. Their is a doctor named Peter Breggin who has a website with lots of info on all psych drugs, which are actually toxic to the brain(that's how they work).
Lots of people have had success with only the fish oil.

Taking him off the medication seems like a very bad idea. With out the medication, he literally vibrates with hyperactivity. He does things like build a tower out of lawn furniture to get on to the roof of the house, He pole vaults over the sofa, he paints on the walls of his room, strips and runs outside. With out the medication, he is nervous and hyper sensitive. He can't be around other children because he has a tendency to act out physically if they upset him.

It may not be a good idea to make judgments without knowing the facts about the child. Medication is not good, but the illness can cause much more trouble than the drugs. Keeping a child untreated, has long term effects. The child will never socialize properly (he/she will often or "always" be rejected by the other kids and often by the teachers who feel uncapable of keeping things under control), and that will be kept in his/her memories and life experiences.
No one can tell for sure what will this person become as he/she grows up. If the experience of feeling unwanted by his peers and educators is a daily routine, will this child become a stable and normal adult? Is it something that anyone can get over it? I have a few doubts...
Treatment is needed if the level of hyperactivity is high enough to cause damage. Only someone who knows the child WELL can tell. Using fatty oils instead of the normal treatment that has been used for a few decades, may be an option, its a matter of testing, but this critical view of the use of medication may not help, it is easy to try to make someone feel guilty, it may not be so black and white if you are going down the streat in a truck without breaks. It is not a crime yet, for some it may be the salvation.

I am concerned about tapering off of the Metadate CD by quitting cold turkey. This is what my doctor told me; and he's from Harvard.... 'Just stop taking it'. That's all. I've had pretty bad withdrawels and horrific experiences stopping adderall, etc just cold turkey and frankly don't trust this approach. I've been on Metadate CD for a little over 2 weeks. I started @20mg day for several days; the quickly moved up to 40 and even quicker up to 60mg day. I'm just really concerned and honestly don't believe I should just stop it without weaning off the drug for atleast a few days. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
