Tramadol (Ultram) for pain, and
Hydroxyzine for nausea.
The doctor's don't want me on oxycontin anymore
because it's a narcotic, well it was making me
sick anyway i guess.
Well i am going thru the horrible withdrawl! :-(
Today i went in to see the doctor and my blood pressure is high (it has NEVER, EVER been high) and I have a fever and my pupils are dilated the doctor said, indicating that i'm going thru withdrawl being that i haven't been on oxycontin for awhile.
I am sooooooo hoping that this ultram helps with my pain and that hydroxyzine helps with the nausea.

I may be mistaken, but is hydroxyzine not a rocket proppellant that has been used in medical circles as a medication? Hope you make out ok.

??? I don't get what you mean??
The hydroxyzine (Vistaril) is for nausea
and other things.
I get so sick it seems with any kind of med's
that i take that my primary doctor told me
to try this.
Please explain tho what you meant on what you
said, I didn't understand it! haha ;-) Kim

I've never heard of this anti-nausea medication...They've given me phenergan quite a bit for nausea/vomitting and hyoscamine for abdominal cramping... As far as Ultram goes, I've never taken it, but I hope it works for you. Unfortunately for me, my doctors just think I'm a dumb kid who likes to complain.. Apparently that's why it took them 5 years to figure out my gallbladder needed to come out. But obviously after 2 years, I'm still having problems with that. I've also had headaches since I was a baby, and I mean BAD headaches, that the doctors just ignore. They've never even done tests to find out why I have always had these horrible headaches... And then all my back problems I've had and still having, I don't get anything except Ibuprofen 800 and all it does is make my stomach bother me worse. Hopefully soon I'll get through to them. I've already changed doctors several times.. None are sympathetic, and they don't seem to ever want to refer me to anyone else.. The only GOOD doctor I have is my Ear,nose, throat doctor because he actually listens to me, and gives ME the choices to make about my body.. I'm actually scheduled for surgery to have a lymph node removed behind my ear on the 20th, which is actually why I joined these health boards in the first place, although no one knows much about this surgery to give me an idea of what to expect. Well I wish you the best, and hopefully you get through your withdrawls and get some greatly needed relief, and hopefully I will too soon.
P.S. Sorry for babbling so much, I just wanted to let you know what's up with me a little bit. If you have any advice for me, it'd be greatly appreciated also.. Good luck!

well--went and did a search on the hydroxyzine. It usually is prescribed for itching, skin rash hives, etc. It is also used for anxiety. I thought that this was a relatively new drug derived from rocket fuel--believe it or not---but I may be wrong. Dunno why you are on it. Maybe just try 100mgs gravol at night before bed--it makes you drowsy and will relax you and your stomach---I use it daily for nausea. Talk to your doctor and arm yourself with info. Its all on the web for the looking. Good Luck.

Kim -
I have taken Ultrams for 2 years for back pain - hernitated L5-S1. Had nucleoplasty procedure and no longer have to take - unless I do something stupid with my back. :>
My experience with them has been good. When I first took them I was a little spacy, but I adjusted to that quickly (2 days) and found that they not only took away the pain, but elevated my mood slightly. Always a good thing! :> The only thing I noted concerning side effects were that they were dehydrating (drink lots of water and eat lots of fruit & veggies) and that they tended to suppress my appetite.
A note about the withdrawl. Most docs say this doesn't happen - well, I found that I would get a headache and runny nose - kind of like a cold and feel poopy (technical term :> ). However, this is not bad, goes away in about a day and only happens if you take them everyday and then stop.
Good luck. I hope you are pain free soon.

Hi, I was taking 1 oxycontin a day (10mg)
even tho that didn't take away all of my pain.
I was on it since Janaury, and just stopped
2 weeks ago, the past 2 weeks have been hell for
me because i was going thru withdrawl, i had
high blood pressure (never had high blood pressure
ever before) and i had a slight fever and the doctor
said it's because i was going thru withdrawl.
That was the worst feeling ever, i hope i never have
to go thru that again! :-(
yeah most of the doctor's that i go see (primary doctor's at park nicollet) don't want to prescribe
any kind of narcotics because they all say that you
can become "addicted" and that narcotics makes the pain worse (that's what a couple of the primary doctor's have told me anyway).
well they just stopped me cold turkey off of the oxycontin, i went to see another primary doctor because the other one that i have been seeing since december said that she wouldn't give me anymore pain med's (of any kind) that i just had to learn to deal with the pain, etc.. she said alot of nasty remarks towards me, so then i switched to another primary doctor. well this one has me on "ultram" and the "visatril" because i get so sick from any kind of
medication (my body is really sensitive).
she wants to see me within the next week to see if these med's are working for me, well I am glad now that they didn't put me back on the oxycontin (even tho at the time i was really upset because they wouldnt give me anymore)
but the ultram has been helping me out alot of my pain (i still have pain but not as bad) and the visitral is helping with my nausea, etc..
I'm waiting for a phone call from the pain clinic anyday now they should call me, i just called there a few days ago and the lady said that they have everything, that everythings in progress now (my referral, my medical records and my questionaire packet that i mailed to them). so now it's just the waiting game!
My doctor told me that Ultram isn't a narcotic but it's below it, i didnt quit understand what she meant?
Will i still get withdrawel's if i stop taking it??
I have looked it up on the internet and i cant really find out info about it.

Kim sorry to say but your doc is a butthead!! Go over to the addiction and recovery board and you will see Ultram is also addictive there are so many over there withdrawing from it. So if your doc is worried about addiction he needs to get you off the Ultram and on to a nice NSAID that will tear up your stomach like it did mine. The fact the oxycontin didnt help you was you were on the lowest dose and only once a day. For chronic pain you are supposed to take it at least twice a day to keep a constant level of the med in your system. I was on 10mg twice a day a few months ago and it wasnt helping so he upped it to 20mg twice a day. I have since quit the oxycontin because it was too expensive and I didnt want to take as much narcotics. I was on Oxycontin 20mg twice a day, percocet for BT pain one 4 times a day and one 2mg Dilaudid at bedtime I felt like a walking pharmacy. So I detoxed myself off of the Oxycontin and the Dilaudid (which I wasnt dependant on at once a day really) and stayed on the 4 percs a day. I just had my first Pain Management appt on Tuesday and he gave me OXY IR (oxycodone 10mg instant release one 3 times a day and percocet 5mg one twice a day) He told me since my pain is chronic and is now considered nerve pain that I will be on these meds the rest of my life and he said there is nothing wrong with it if I stick with my dosage instructions. The way doctors throw that word addiction around and its not even true unless someone abuses thier meds or takes them for pleasure as addiction is mental...sure your body will develop a tolerance over time and you will become physcially dependant it doesnt make you an addict. NSAIDS are just as bad for you physically as narcotics 12 years of NSAID use before I even touched a Narc ruined my stomach and I now have to take meds for that for the rest of my life. I have not heard of the anti nausea med you are talking about I have only heard of gravol but you might want to try Losec or Nexium they prevent your stomach from producing as much acid which might help your nausea. I am sorry this is so long I just hate seeing people suffer because doctors are themselves so mis informed on nacotics. I wish you a wonderful day and good luck finding a treatment good for you. God Bless.
Autumn.
Oh and Kim I was being sarcastic on the taking of NSAIDS I didnt really mean to get them and tear up your stomach lol. Your doctor is a mean person and its thier job to give you what it takes to control your pain and that in the end is up to you. I seriously hope this pain doc has a brain and isnt afraid to treat you with ANYTHING that might help you. Your system being so sensitive might be a problem but you know what you can and cant handle if the Ultram is working stay on it but dont be fooled by them saying it isnt a narcotic because it is its a weak one but a narcotic all the same. Take care.

hello everyone!!!!!!! I am new here I have migrated from another site and hope to be welcomed as well as helpful here as I can. I've had chronic pain for 2 1/2 years. It's in my neck and left shoulder that they call radiculopathy, permanent nerve damage, c5/6 buldging disc, spondy, DDD and on and on. My worst pain I quess is the radiculopathy. Oh and I also have nerve root lesions, so they caused the medicine from the 2 failed ESI's not to work. 3 NS's have said surgery will never be an option for me. I started out with all the meds you mentioned. I had the visteryl after a major anxiety attack and it worked, but it was a shot. I hope these meds work for you. Honestly though they wouldnt begin to touch mine. Ultram was like eating a tic-tac. I dont think they are as addictive but still addictive, they say. I cant see if you get in alot of pain that they will help and you'll end up hurting till you get something else, you may wanna keep something stronger around for emergencies. My dr.'s have never even mentioned the word addiction to me, but they have said I will be on long acting narcotics for all my life. I fought the long acting ones for a while and then ended up in more pain than I could never have imagined, so for me oxycontin has been a miracle, I take 40mgs twice a day and the oxyir for break thru. This is my third try, cause like you they made me nausous. But not now. I'm so glad my body adjusted to it. These dr.'s sooo worried about addiction have clearly never felt or had chronic pain, I describe mine as a throbbing, beating tug o war. It's all about being in control of your meds. Thats my thoughts on it. I hope your meds work likr they should and you never have the pain I have. THERESA
I wnated to add that 10 mg oxy once a day?? No wonder it didnt help your pain and you were probly sick from with drawals, oxy is usually dosed twice a day.

Hi Kim!
I have been away from the boards for quite some time (years) and returned to read them today.I have a number of medical problems I'm under treatment for, and I also work in the medical field.
Regarding hydroxyzine, I took it pretty much daily for years! I was using it because I have multiple allergies(environmental, meds, etc.) that result in intense generalized itching, runny nose and tearing eyes. I also have IBS and the nausea that often accompanies it. This medicine helped more than anything else I ever used for all those symptoms.
The only side effects I had were drowsiness and dry mouth, and the drowsiness lessened substantially the longer I took it, to the point that I could work or function well when I took it in the daytime & it only made me feel tired, not sleepy. Small price to pay for the results!
Wishing you the best in health & comfort,
"the Stork"- Linda
PS I took Ultram in the past too, but it was not effective in relieving my pain.
