I am taking hydrocondone 7.5 at BT and occasionally take oxycodone during the day. Pain Management Dr. just added Neurontin 300mg at BT and the Vioxx in the morning. Is there a test to see if there is any liver damage occuring. My family worries about the addiction factor also. Been taking the pain meds regularly for 2-3 months--periodically before that. Have 2 herniated discs in my neck and been in constant pain since Nov. 2002.

Hi, yes you an get liver damage while being
on certain med's for a certain amount of time.
I was on oxycontin from January of this year until
a couple of weeks ago, and i just had blood tests done
and the results came back not too good, my liver
results were very, very high. I am off of oxycontin
now and my primary doctor put me on "ultram" she's
going to have me keep having blood work done every month just to see how my liver is. Here a person is
in pain so they need pain med's but when there on them then they can damage the liver, you just can't win i guess no matter what you do! :-( Kim

I dunno---I have been taking high amounts of narcotic painkillers for over 10 years now including tylenol 4s and now dilaudid 72mgs 3times daily. A routine blood test shows my liver is about the only healthy body part I have left!!!

I used to take hydrocodone 5/500, 5-6 per day, since I was in so much pain some days I would find myself taking as many as 10-12. I had blood work done, and my liver enzymes were extremely high. My PM Dr has me on Kadian (Time release morphine, I take 100 mg 2x day. Since I started taking these in Jan, My enzymes have returned to almost normal. I do not take anything with tylenol since the test results back in Dec-02.

My Dr just put me on topamax on tuesday, and the pt info said that if you have had any previous problems with liver to notify Dr. I wouldn't think he would give me anything since he knows about my history.

hi kim, I had a test come back a lil high too. I had gallbladdder surgery and the test was ALT-spgt=51. Then after being sick I had the test come bsck as 39. So whats the point we worry? I do get aches and pains in the area but thought it was scar tissue from surgery. I have chronic neck syndromes, so the surgeon I saw said that controlling my neck pain will be my biggest problem for rest of life. But I see a GI on june 9th. .I dont drink. so not sure what to worry about. any thoughts welcome,THERESA
