Hi. My husband had shots in neck - but they were for severe headaches associated with Gulf War Syndrome. Sorry I can't be of any more help :( Perhaps somebody with some knowledge about neck pain will come along and have some good info for you!!!

Good luck!

i also wonder how the cervical epiderals work. I have 2 herniated disc's in my neck and have been in pain since Nov. 2002. Have tried anit-inflam, muscle relaxers, oxycodone, vicodin and lidoderm patches. All with very little results. Physical Therapy was a bust! July 1st I get my first epideral--i am hoping for a miricle. Anyone out there got one!??

The shots that you mention for in your neck, are they the stellate gangloin blocks? I have had many of them to help the pain for crps. If they are the same let me know and I can tell you more about them.

Epidural steroids are a hit and miss option. 60% respond and 40% don't. I was in the 40%. I got zero relief from the epidurals injections and I was also taking oral prednisone at 40mg a day at the time.

Sometimes, it is a structural problem and not just inflamation causing the pain. I finally had surgery to remove the discs causing the nerve impingement. I had a very whimpy, ineffective PM who wouldn't let me take any narcotics at all, even though I was clearly in pain and had no previous abuse issues whatsoever.

My neurosurgeon gave me 10mg Norco and even postop has told me,"there is no reason for you to be in pain" He told me to call his office and ask for stronger meds if I needed them.

I was very disappointed with my PM experience, especially in light of the new nationwide use of the pain scale in hospitals and the promise to effectively address a patient's pain issues. Shame on the PM's who are afraid to offer relief to their patients. I owe my PM $800 after insurance and I am outraged that I am having to pay for such an incompetent handling of my case.

As soon as I am fused in my neck and my pain level drops, I will also drop the Norco. Who really wants to live on pain meds all the time? Not me!

Sorry to get on my soapbox. As a healthcare professional, it just burns me up that I received such poor medical care.

Guess my next step is to gather all information I can and plan for surgery as epidorals have not helpedPain meds are either makig me dizzy or sleepy and I can't funtion like this. I am so thankful for GH and our children being raised. I sure commend those that have little ones and are in pain.
Prayers and thoughts are with all of you for a pain free tomorrow

Hello

I realize this is a bit older posting, and you may have already had the procedure done already. If not, I'll relay a bit of what I went through. They first discovered I had an HNP at C6/C7 in 11/01. They of course, chose to do nothing but drug me because it was a W/C claim.

Well, the pain got progressively worse, I lost feeling in my hands and was completely unable to sleep, even on Lorcet 10/650, Soma 350 and Ambien 10. Another MRI showed an annular tear which allowed the inner disc material to protrude 7mm into my spinal canal. Not good.

So in the doc's infinite wisdom, he prescribed a Facet Block at C6/C7. For me, it was a rather painful experience. They got me on the table, shaved and scrubbed the area, (similar to surgery itself) and stuck an IV solution on one side of my spine and guided the Epidural Steroid Injection on the other side with an X-Ray device. (forgot the name of it) It was about 20 minutes of sheer misery. I could feel the needle the whole time.

When they were done, they sat me up.....and I promptly fell off the table. I managed to not do me any damage, but it sure scared the heck out of everyone. As we drove home, I got the worst BURNING pain in my groin area, and it was a totally unpleasant experience all the way around, to say the least. -AND, the ESI did absolutely nothing except cause the occassional groin pain and give me the worst acid reflux I could ever have imagined. I constantly had acid in my throat that Nexium finally brought under control.

Others may have had much better experiences to share, but based on what happened to me, I wouldn't recommend the procedure to anyone at all. If it's THAT bad, surgery in the answer........
