Hi everyone,
I just read something (I think from Autumm)about IBS with CP patients. I have been diagnosed with IBS and take dicyclomine (sp?) as needed. It never occured to me that the two might be related. Is this common? Just curious since it is the first I have heard that....

Yup from what I hear from my Pm doc it is quite common which shocked the heck out of me because I thought I just had another medical condition. My mother has Colitis but she started off with IBS and since Colitis can run in familes or so I have heard I thought the IBS I was Dx with years ago was related to what my mother had.
It wasnt untill I went to my first Pain Management doc appt that he shed some light on this. He asked how long I has the IBS and I told him about 10 or so years and I have been a CP patient for about 12 going on 13 years. And it was the doc that linked up the 2 for me and told me about 70% or so of CP patients also suffer with IBS. I know there are quite a few members here that have it as well I am sure they will be commenting on it as well. Take care.
Autumn.

Avogrado,
Hey all. Yep I have the good ole IBS thing myself. In fact going on 17 years. Thats 1 year less than when I broke my back. My surgeons at the time told me that chronic pain and IBS go hand in hand. It has something to do with the pain signals and the signals that trigger bowel movements get mixed up alot. At least thats what my PM doc has said. and it makes sense to me as well. I have taken Disyclomine"sp" in the past as well as Librax and some others. I now take just low dose Elavil at night. Not only does it help with the chronic pain but in low doses it acts as a calming agent to the large intestine as well. And when I get the constiaption thing"which is on again of again kind of thing LOL" I try to go the Anaturel' way like added fruits and veggies to my diet. But when that doesn't do the trick then I take Milk of Mag. I was told to stay away from the stimulant laxatives because they can only make the IBS flare up worse. Well now enough of this Crappy talk already. LOL. I hope you have a great day and don't hesitate to ask anything else here. It seems we have all gotten to really know each other very well here. Inside and out. LOL. Take care......

Does anyone know if it is in the same class as "Effexor"? My doctor put me on that 2 months ago. I do not think I am depressed but I do have a lot of fatigue and seem to have trouble with energy to clean house and so forth. He thought it would help. He had tried Zoloft before but I had terrible night sweats which did not go away. I have not noticed any difference on the Effexor but I promised to take it for at least 3 months since he said it can take some time to notice the difference.

avagrado,
Elavil is related to the tricylcalites, And Effexor is related to selective seritonin re-uptake inhebitures"sp". They are both antidepresants. They just work alittle different from one another. I hope that this helps. They are finding so many use's for this drup type in PM medice. Take care....
