Hey, sorry its taken me so long to get back on here.Yea, I had my surgery March 24th, had a spinal fusion (L5 to S1) with screws and rods put inserted around my lower spine.I had origialy hurt myself at work lifting 5 gallon bucket of paint but when I went to my orthopedic doctor he said I had something called spondylolthesis grade two, meaning I had a slippage of 55% in my lower back and he said I was born with that. Ok after my surgery I spent 5 days in the hospital and then came home and stayed out of work for 10 weeks. Then I went back to work on light duty (really not doing anything but talk to customers) and only working 6 hours a day. When I camr home he put me on 20mg oxycontin twice daily and 5mg percocet 4 times a day. Ok after 8 weeks had passed he put me on just the percocet 6 times a day (no oxycontin).Well at that point (8th week) I noticed I was'nt getting any better so I called my doctor and went back to see him, he did ex-rays and said the hardware looked fine and thought the fusion was taking ok. He told me to rest more and I told him I was having a tuff time getting his office staff to get my percocet refilled so he put me on Loratb 10 cause he could put refills on that med., he put 4 refills at a time on it so all I had to do was go back to the pharmacy. Ok after the 12th week I was really starting to have alot more pain so he sent me to a pain managment doctor, who I really like. Well because my pain was getting much worse he put me back on the oxycontin 20 mg twice daily but took me off the percocet, but like your boyfriend I was having side effects, I would get real tired, sometimes dizzy when I would stand up, and A little light headed. I told my pain doc about this and he said I would get use to it and I did after a few weeks on it. Ok after that my ortho ordered a discagram and a mylograhm test and they showed me to have degenerative discs with one of them having a radial tear in it.Well at this point I had to stop working. I also was told that workers comp should be paying because we found the torn disc and that was a result of my accident at work, but they dont see it that way so we are going to court next month to let a judge settle it. Ok, in the last few weeks my pain has really gotten worse and my orthopedic doctor said I need another surgery soon to fix the torn disc, said he would have to go in from my front side because of the hardware allready in my back. Also my pain doctor had to bump up my pain meds cause I could'nt sleep cause of how bad I've been hurting, I mean its gotten bad, so he put me on oxycontin 40mg and gave me percocet 5mg to take twice a day for breakthrough pain, it seems to me after about 8 hours that the oxycontin has started to ease off. Well I gave my employer my doctor's orders last week ,which said I could not work anymore right now, so they said I could go back on my short term disability, BUT 5 days after I gave them the doctors letter they called me at home Friday night and told me I was terminated. I am so scared at this point because I really need my health insurance because my back is in bad shape. I still cant figure out why I was fired cause I have NEVER had an unexcused absence, all I can figure is they saw the copy of the law suit and that was it, they wanted me gone!!!So right now I hope the courts will help me next month, I have the best attorney in my city working on this and he says he thinks I will be getting alot of money from all this. I did not have to pay him anything up front , he said he would collect his fees when I was awarded a settlement, so My wife and I are really praying http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/bang.gif cause I also have three little girls. sorry so long but thats my story for right now!

Hi! You have really been through the wringer! Yesterday we went to another doctor, and finally some answers.
The bone grafts have disintergrated, which accounts for the pain, and also there may be a compressed nerve in the area....caused by the bone grafts dissolving.
So tomorrow we go back to the hospital for a cervical mylogram and CT scan. This will let the doctor know more of what is going on. Next Tuesday we will get the results, and find out when surgery is. We got more answers yesterday from this doctor than from the other 3 combined. The only bad thing is that this doctor is 105 miles way....but if he makes this better...it will be well worth it. Also this doctor hit the ceiling about my boyfriend ever being prescribed the oxycontin....and now we are in the process of tapering him off of it altogether...just glad we caught this in the early stages. Thank God the workman's comp is working with us totally and we don't have to fight them on top of everything else.
Just one bit of bad news at this time....I was laid off of my job this morning...haven't told my boyfriend yet..not going to wake him. This too shall pass...one more test I guess. But we really depended on my salary...so off to hit the pavement sometime today. I just have to look at it as a blessing in disguise...at least now I can go w/my boyfriend tomorrow for his tests....I won't be at work worrying all day.
Please keep me posted on your progess....we just have to keep pushing ahead...and try to remember that we are in this place in our lives for a reason...whether we understand or like it. I am glad to hear you have a support system....so many people don't.....Take care! Debbi
