This article was published in yesterdays USA Today newspaper. For the first time doctors have replaced dead tissue in s msn's failing heart by using "a living cell patch" made of cells taken from his thigh muscle.
The goal is nothing less then replacing a pool of dead cells with a pool of new ones.
Researchers have begun experimenting with a different type of cell therapy, using adult stromsl stem cells. Stromol stem cells, found in the bone marrow, can chsnge into many kinds of cells, including bone, muscle and liver cells, when they migrste to other parts of the body
In that study the researchers implanted stem cells into the damaged hearts of rats . The cells were trsnsformed into viable heart muscule cells in 20 of thr 22 animals studied. Bruce
