I'm having a problem with urination...too much of it!
I go often, sometimes within minutes of the last one.
Most times it feels like my bladder is always full...
Is this characteristic of PD? I've been checked negative for prostate problems.
Would like some PD'ers input ???

Yes, Ziggy, it is a problem. I am a 57 year old female and it still happens even after I have had the DBS surgery. I too don't empty my bladder. They found that out on an ultrasound they did in the hospital. I felt lke that is what was happening. They wanted me learn to self-catheritize myself, but I declined LOL. I just try to go a little bit more than I think I can. Even that doesn't work all the time.

I have the same problem and in men it is usually caused by an inlarged prostate. It is called BPH. benign prostatic hyperplasia. the When the prostate gets larger, it chokes off the ureter causing retention of urine.

I was taking Cardura, but stoped taking it when their was a warning in the news not to take it. Their are about 3-4 drugs in this class, one is Hytrin, and the have a common side effect that when you stand up from a sitting position, you might experience a sudden drop in blood pressure which makes you dizzy, lightheaded or fainting. It got to where I felt the symptoms every time I stood up,

One drug that does not have this side effect is Flomax.I tried to get a prescription today and the doctor expected me to make an appointment. I didn't think that was necessary, so I decided to do without it.

I forgot to tell you, you can review the possible side effects and how Flomax corrects the problem by going to www.webmd.com (http://www.webmd.com)

Frequent and urgent urination occur in Parkinson's disease as a result of bladder overactivity. This is probably a direct consequence of Parkinson's disease. Prostate enlargement may also contribute to urinary symptoms, but, obviously, this is not a factor for women. Bladder overactivity may be improved by medications such as Detrol. All medications can have side effects. Detrol may cause some dryness of mouth, among other things. Men with enlarged prostates must be cautious with the use of Detrol and similar medications.

MD, glad you clarified all that. I am "kicking" myself for omitting the pd part.

Detrol:Relieves spasms of the bladder, It is used to treat ovrtactive bladder with the symptoms of urinary frequency, urinary urgency and urinary incontinence.

Precautions:Use caution when driving, may cause dizziness, drowsiness or blurred vision. Use alcohol cautiously. Alcohol may increase drowsiness and dizziness when taking Detrol.

Avoid becoming overheated in hot weather. May increase the risk the risk of heat stroke because it may decrease sweating. Drink plenty of fluid to maintain hydration.

Symptoms of Parkinsons and/or side effects of the pd drugs that I have in common with the side effects of this drug are:dizziness, drowsiness, double vision, become overheated easily.

My husband also had the urinary frequency problem. His Urologist gave him Detrol. He took one tab/daily, and the fourth day, he could not void. I FINALLY got him in to see the Dr.(our Dr. was out of town) and got catherized.........l600 cc. Was he ever miserable! He has enlarged Prostate, I mean did have, and had surgery. After surgery, he was put on Ditropan XL, 15Mg.daily, and it has worked well....also, a prosom tab at night helped stop this q2h getting up.Betty D.

Ditropan and Detrol work by identical mechanisms. Both carry a risk of inability to void in men with enlarged prostates. Ditropan is not safer in this regard. Both are good medications for overactive bladder, and both must be used cautiously in men because of the potential for urine retention.

As one with the enlarged prostate problem, urine retention and orthostatic hypotension when using Cardura and related drugs, MD, what do you think of Flomax? I am running out of options.

For a man with an enlarged prostate and problems with blood pressure Flomax would be a very reasonable choice. The intent of this medication is to reduce outflow obstruction (e.g., from an enlarged prostate), and, unlike Cardura and Hytrin, it generally does not cause the blood pressure do drop. Further, it does not cause problems with Parkinson's disease or the medications used to treat Parkinson's disease.

Of course, all medications should be discussed with one's own physician.

I am a movement disorders physician. I do not mean to intrude on this site, nor do I wish to give specific advice to individuals. I look at this site because I learn from listening to my patients and from what others are discussing. I'll butt out and observe.

For man with Parkinson's disease and also an enlarged prostate Flomax is a very reasonable choice to treat urinary urgency and frequency. Flomax works by reducing outflow obstruction, such as occurs with an enlarged prostate. Flomax generally is well tolerated, does not conflict with Parkinson's disease or the medications used to treat it, and, unlike Cardura and Hytrin, it should not lower the blood pressure.

Of course, all medications should be discussed with one's own physician.

Hi MD,

I wondered if you were a physician when I saw your name, but then I thought, no, couldn't be. I think it's wonderful that you are taking the time to participate in this board. You will learn a lot and hopefuly we will learn from you.
