I just wanted to find out if any of you know anything about Shy-Drager? I have had frequent short blackouts when I stand up, and alot of swallowing problems and aspiration. I have stumbled on some info about Shy-Drager while looking for PD info and alot of the syptoms really seem to fit into what I am trying to relay to my neuro. I hope I am just being paranoid but just wondered if there were things I needed to bring to the Drs. attention so he could look into this.

I think you should bring everything to the attention of your doctor, whether you think it relates or not. There, now that I've said that, I have to remember to do that too. It's so easy just to tell him/her the symptoms you think are related to your particular disease and his/her particular specilaty that sometimes we forget and leave off something really important.

Kim, The fainting after you stand up might be a side effect of a drug you are taking. I had the same thing thing, ad it is caused by a sudden drop in blood pressure whe you stand up. You can document this by taking your blood pressure while you are sitting and standing. Mine was caused by a prostate drug Cardura, which I learned is also used to treat hypertension. The cure was I stopped taking the drug. The symptom is called orthostatic hypotension.

Thanks to everyone for your replies. Unfortunately, I ended up spending most of the day at the ER after passing out in the shopping center and having to be tranported by ambulance--how embarassing!! It is the conclusion of the Dr's there and the consult of my neuro's partner that they are 99.9% sure it is Shy-Drager. I am to see my current neuro on monday to confirm everything. I think the part that is bothering me the most is that they have restricted me from driving for now and possibly forever. I just hate to have to depend on other people to take me places. I will keep you posted on what I find out. this has been a will make it through somehow I am sure.
Hope everyone is having a great weekend.

Shy-Drager syndrome is one form of a more general disorder called Multiple Systems Atrophy (MSA). Shy-Drager syndrome is marked by prominent and early problems with the autonomic nervous system- the part of the nervous system involved with regulation of blood pressure, sweating, and baldder and bowel function, to name a few things. People with Shy-Drager syndrome may appear to have Parkinsonism, but typically would have litle or no tremor and poor response to l-DOPA (Sinemet).

However, as Bruce points out, dropping of blood pressure is possibly a medication-related problem. Not only Cardura, but most of the PD medications can contribute to a drop of the blood pressure with postural change. Also, PD itself often can cause some problems with blood pressure, although generally not as severely as Shy-Drager syndrome.

Kim. you can learn more about MSA by going to www.plwp.org (http://www.plwp.org) and clicking on MGH/PLWP orum. Then click on the topic "Hi" by tim0661. When you are there, click on MSA information. His name is Tim Foley and will answer all your questions. He is well informed and is an inspiration to me and many others.

wemove.org is another excellent website to learn more about Parkinsonism due to MSA or other disorders.
