MD. I will probably find out soon why the surgery failed, but just to energize the board a little. I was just curious if you had any thoughts on this subject.
Some of the reasons the neurosurgen told me were, electrodes implanted outside the target site, deffective electrodes, system not working because of something like broken wiring, or that I may not have Parknsons. Tne last reason is doubtful.
I am curious if you are aware how common this problem is and, if I have corrective surgery, will they remove and replace all of the hardware.

Bruce what do you think about starting a DBS/ST forum on this BB.Moderators could help us.There is a need.Shall we see if there is any feed back on this BB?
Hang in there dear friend,

Hi Bruce,
My understanding is the secret of success lies with the microelectrode recording. I remember the neurosurgeon demanding complete silence in the room several times and I could hear a crackling noise each time. In his joyful voice he said, "we found it" each time I heard the crackling.
I'm sure you will find success at KU. When is your new date?
Also, isn't there a new BB for DBSers other than the Activa Board? Do you know the site address?
You know you are in all of our prayers.
Sandy

Sandy, you read my mind. I feel like the hospital where I had the surgery, must be about the only one in the country that did NOT use the microelectrode system.I agree with you and strongly suspect that is the reason the surgery didn't work. Every med center web site I have located plus what several people who are scheduled for the surgery, everyone of the hospitals use the microelectrodes.
I lost my ride to KU, but found a better deal. I just visted an neurosurgeon at Indiana University medical center and he has done many of the surgeries. I typed out all my questions and the first is does he use the microelectrode. You can guess the answer, yes he does use it.
He personaly called an MDS doctor and they even rearranged the schedule to get me in sooner. My appointment is Dec 17.
The reason for the questions is the neurosurgeon explained it is not easy to determine if the electrodes are really off target. We are talking about a difference of a millimeter, and that isn't much.
The MDS doctor will methodically rule out other possible reasons and than I will get an MRI. Their is some risk having the test, because the implanted hardware is like an electrical circuit. Hopefully, the sugery will follow.
Their is a new DBS forum on the Brain Communities site, but their isn't much activity.
Googy, a DBS foum on this site would be good, but it depends on how many people will suport it and post on it. Their is not much incentive to go there, if the site isn't active and that seems to be a problem with the one I referred to,

Bruce,
I'm a big believer that things work out for the best. You lost your ride to KU and you're going to find the help that you need at IU. MRIs are dangerous only if they don't turn you off first. That's one of the best tests to tell them what went wrong. Good luck to you on the 17th. When I get back from my computer sabbatical, I hope to hear good news from you. Noone deserves it more than you. It's a long time coming for you.

Thanks Sandy, at this point, I am just stoic. I am confident that I have found well qualified physicians and that is enough to make me feel better.
It might be a slow process and I will keep you posted

Location, location, location,
and selection, selection selection.
Microelectrode recording enhances the surgeon's ability to get the implanted electrode to the correct location. Use of MRI alone is believed by many doctors involved with DBS to be inadequate because their is some distortion in the MRI scan.
Also, no therapy works for everyone. Proper patient selection of suitable candidates for DBS raises the probability for successful outcomes.
