This is a subject we pwps don't think about, but the more we learn, the better prepared we will be. Dementia affects aboutr 30% of pd patients, or another way to look at it is 70% of us arer not affected.

Dementia of pd is an evolving process like pd itself. At one point it is apparent to all before that point it is there but not apparent, and can be unmasked by drugs.

Sundown syndrome is a behavior that is described as confusion, anxiety, agitation, or disorientation that often occurrs at dusk and into the evening hours. The episodes may last a few hours or throughout the night.

While the cause is unknown, experts believe there are several contributing factors. These include physical and mental exhaustion, and a shift in the "internal body clock" caused by the change from daylight to dark. Some people havw trouble sleping at night, which may contribute to their disorientation. Medication that can cause agitation or confusion also may contribute to the syndrome.

Here are some suggestions.

Schedule more difficult tasks earler in the day.
Restrict sweets and caffeine to th morning hours.
Relax, try heerbal tea or warm milk,
Keep the house well lit.
If the person falls asleep in a chair, don't wake him.
Play soothing music or a favorite video.
Encourage some phyical activity.

Thanks Bruce,

This is something that Bill has had for many years. I can no longer take care of him,it has been a long road this past 29 yrs.He is now in a nursing home.
They have put him on Ativan, with my permission.I will not go into what he gets up to,it is upsetting.

He is in Gods hands.I see him every day,he no longer knows me.

Googy, you seem to be depressed. Don't give up, because you are an inspiration to many people, including me.

Googy,
I'll second that you have been an inspiration to all of us. I am like you are a caregiver for my husband. We are just into this about 5 years with a long road ahead of us. I have not only learned by reading your postings but I have enjoyed.
God Bless you,
Conchata
