Hello,
My husband gags every time he takes his meds.
I thought that it was in his head, he just does not like to take the meds. But I was reading that the stomach mussel could cause it. Does anyone out there have any information for me. Has anyone experienced this.

Difficulty swallowing is common in pd patients that have had the disorder for a few years. I have a problem getting the pills to stay down, and sometimes the pills stick in the back of my throat.
Another problem, is to avoid eating any food containing protein for at least an hour after swalloqing the pills, because the medication will not be absorbed.
What could help is to swallow the pills with his favorite fruit juice or soft drink. It goes down easier when you drink something that tasts good.

Conchata,
In the nursing home my husband is in ,one of the nurses gives him his pills in a spoonful of apple sauce.Your husband could try that to.Of course he is unable to pick them up.I use to put them in his mouth.
Good luck,
Nice having you back Bruce. You are a great help to us all.

OK, then if I am understanding both of you correctly it is more of a psychological problem than a muscle problem. That is refreshing...............
We are going to use juice and apple sauce. Taking meds will be something to look forward to in the future! Thanks for the feedback.

Just wanted to clarify something. Gagging is a nervous problem, but the difficulty in swallowing is a pd symptom. The muscles in the throat are slow just like the rest of the body. The worst thing you can do is to tilt your head back. I start choking and their is a danger of asperation of the food into the lungs. Anything swallowed works best f your chin is almost touching the chest.
