I have a friend with an eccentric family. I've never really seen bahvior like this, and I am wondering what the problem is. Let's start with her brother...

He is 40 years old and has held 2 jobs for about 6 months his entire life. He is completely supported by his parents. He lives in a trailer with a very unstable woman. His mother says he "lacks the capacity to plan" and has suffered from depression. I think it goes beyond this. His personal appearance is shoddy (long hair, skinny, rarely showers) and he is very shy. Yet despite this he is reasonably intelligent.

Now his father is even stranger. He smacks his lips all the time and essentially babbles, seemingly unable to put together a meaningful train of thought. He's always been like this! He is quiet and in his "own world." Occasionally, you can have a conversation with him, but it is frustrating. And he went to an Ivy league school! But after graduating, he worked as a civil engineer but never got past junior status.

What is the deal with this family? Is this a psychotic disorder? Autism? Schizophrenia? If any doctos visit the site, or if anyone has any ideas, feel free to comment.

Your brother seems like to have schizophrenia, and i don't know about your father. Plus i am not a doctor

I, too, am not a doctor, but these really don't sound like any characteristics of schizophrenia. I think there are so many mental illnesses out there that they may be suffering from something else, unless they have more symptoms you are unaware of.

It sounds to me (and I will put money on it) this family is suffering from a generational curse. If you check, you will find that the different behavoirs you see in these two people will also have existed in their other relatives i.e, grands siblings, aunts & uncles and a strong possibility in 1st, 2nd & 3rd genrational cousins. There is a remedy for their condition.

I have a friend who was exactly like this? THe state had him on a cheap and old medication. haldol and it was awful for him so he was not motivated to stay on his medications. He left town and antohther doctor got him on Risperidol and you would never know he had a problem. Very intelligent and humerous and wonderful person. It is ashame some poeople have to suffer like this. I am a nurse and very spiritual person and find the whole subject fascinating and has me perplexed at times? This idea of generational curse very interesting. Something like how alchoholism runs through families?ANd stops everything they were meant to do? WHo would ever think that a man who is halucinating and can not tell reality from what is not real? Hears voices could be a professor and win a nobel prize such as in the movie " A beaugtiful mind?" The mind is an amazing thing. ANd God has given us many things to explore?
