badgirl 01-02-2003, 08:48 PM Has anyone tried this new released medication - Straterra? If so, does it work well? Thanks, Badgirl Sponsor rebecarooni 01-03-2003, 10:18 AM I have read about this stuff and am anxious to discuss it with my son's Doc. It is a nonstimulant med that is supposed to be as effective as ritalin. I don't know if we'll try it or not. We just switched meds and they aren't quite what we had expected. If we change again I'll let you know. My little guy is only 6 so I am trying to find something that won't mess up his appetite too badly. help 01-03-2003, 08:36 PM I'm ditching the adderall and am going to try Straterra when I go to my doc next, I believe it is available in pharmacies Jan.16. I'll keep everyone updated. badgirl 01-04-2003, 12:14 PM Help, please keep me posted, thanks badgirl rainflower 01-04-2003, 01:20 PM Yes...please keep us all posted. I am looking at putting my son on medication, we are still in the process of determining if he needs that or not. I just heard about this yesterday...thanks for the info. tkteach 01-05-2003, 10:45 AM My son has been in a study and has been on this medication since August. The study name is Adamoxitine. It will come out as Straterra in January by the Lilly drug company. It has worked very well for my son. He has eaten well, played hard and has been very much like himself, just calmer and can stay better focused in school. His pediatric dr. is very excited about this new medication. I would recommened it. The only side effects we have experienced is a rash which cleared up quickly and may not have been related. We will continue the study for about 3-5 more months. badgirl 01-05-2003, 04:11 PM tkteach, how old is your son? Badgirl tkteach 01-06-2003, 11:59 AM badgirl, My son turned 11 in late August. cwiner 01-10-2003, 04:03 PM How long did it take the Strattera to kick in? My doctor just prescribed 25mg for my daughter. He wants to take her off of Concerta immediately and I'm afraid that if the Strattera doesn't work right away that she will be a mess at school. Pleae respond. Sarmor 01-11-2003, 08:41 AM Does anyone know how expensive strattera is? It is so brand new, I am afraid our prescription coverage will not pay for it. It seems to take them awhile. Thanks. bkmom 01-11-2003, 09:59 AM My son was recently diagnosis with ADHD. We decided to try Straterra. We noticed an immediate change in him. The first 4 days he will be taking 25 mg. and then 40 mg. thereafter. He is 6 1/2 years old and in the first grade. I am SUPER happy that this is NOT a stimulant drug because it will work 24 hours a day. After reading a little of the pamplet, there doesn't seem to be a lot of side effects. My spouse noticed (after about 5 hours of taking the drug) that our son pay attention to an activity that they were working on much better than before. We have a group activity this afternoon and we are really anxious to see how he behaves...which is usually really a difficult situation. badgirl 01-11-2003, 11:09 AM Please keep us all posted on the results of this medication. Also can the children gain weight on this medication? I think if anyone can get their children off of stimulants this would be a lot better for them, Thanks Badgirl cwiner 01-12-2003, 06:16 PM My daughter started today. I don't think I saw much of a difference between Concerta and Strattera as far as her behavior is concerned. Tomorrow (Monday) will be the true test when she goes to school. She did, however, eat way more today than she normally eats when on the Concerta. This is a good thing because she is never hungry on the Concerta. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping that this will be a successful med for her. badgirl 01-12-2003, 07:41 PM cwiner, I hope so too, keep us posted, Badgirl wonderingIam 01-13-2003, 08:40 AM Our son started with Strattera on Saturday. So far so good. He is eating good, and goes to sleep with no problem. His behavior is better, however, he is still coming off of the adderrall and has a few moments. His doctor started him out on the lowest dosage and will work his way up to a suitable dose for out son. Will keep you posted. Connor5 01-13-2003, 02:01 PM I went to the doc. the other day and asked about the Strattera. He wants to start my son on it next month. My son is now on AdderallXR and is awake until midnight..every night! For those of you who have children on the Strattera, have you noticed a difference if their sleeping habits? addparent 01-13-2003, 09:45 PM My son has gone through AdderalXR and Concerta 36mg and didn't grow a pound or inch for one year. He just turned 7 years old. We started him last week on Straterra (through a study) and so far he is eating well, sleeping well, but has more severe tics than he had on the other medicines. Also, we were started with 10 mg which is not working well enough in school. Tomorrow we are requesting the study increase the dosage. Is 25mg good for a 50 pound kid? cwiner 01-14-2003, 07:29 AM My daughter started Sunday and is falling asleep very easily. I think we will try to discontinue the clonodine which she has always needed with the stimulants. She also is eating more than I've ever seen her eat- not a bad thing because she was never hungry with Concerta. Hopefully she will start growing because she is 13 and is only about 4'8" and is in delayed puberty. (We are a tall family, so I know she has height potential) bkmom 01-14-2003, 09:54 AM My son is 6 1/2, 4"2, and weighes 66 pounds. He started off with 25 mg of straterra for four days. My doctor said that this was to get his system used to the drug. Today his is starting to take 40 mg. for the next too weeks. As I stated before, he is doing very well on it. He is so much calmer and carries a conversation well. His teacher said that she was noticing a difference in his behavior the first day he was back to school. He is eating regularily (pretty much the same) so it doesn't seem to be effecting his eating habits. He is sleeping much better! Before he was on any meds, he had a very difficult time sleeping and almost every night wake up. Now, he is going to sleep easily and is sleeping through out the night. He has had no side effects as of yet. We have also doing "1, 2, 3, Magic" as a behavioral mod for the last month or so. We barely hit a "1" and he is listening well. At a large group event, he was a totally different kid. I am very pleased with straterra and hope that everything continues to improve. Our famiy life is MUCH different, I believe, to this drug. wonderingIam 01-14-2003, 10:59 AM For any child that will be switching from Adderrall XR to Strattera, remember there is a withdrawal period from the Adderall and not to stop entirely, but to gradually take him off--if possible. We found out the hard way...our son was not the same child..his moods were extreme...screaming, very oppositional. He is better now and are monitoring his dosage on Strattera. He is on the lowest dosage now, but I believe it will need to be increased before long. Just trying to be patient. cwiner 01-14-2003, 05:28 PM My daughter said she fell asleep during a class today at school. Is anyone noticing that their children are more tired on Strattera? rebecarooni 01-15-2003, 11:49 AM We are going in for a med check on 2/3 and I am going to ask for Strattera. My 6 year old is on Wellbutrin 100mg 2x per day. He has recently been diagnosed with Asperger's so we are really trying to control the ADHD so that we can work on the Asperger's. Thanks so much and please keep posting your results!! addvocate 01-30-2003, 09:40 PM My 13 year old- defintiely VERY tired coming off of Adderal XR to Strattera. Effects very gradual - about day 5 tiredness disappeared. Appetite is wonderful. Waiting for therapeutic dose to kick in for full decision. It is good to not have the ups & downs of the stimulants - much more even. Good luck, patience is good. Wish I had more! Just_me_today 06-02-2005, 11:27 AM I wish I had never been put on Adderrall. Today is my second day without it. My daughter said I am much nicer. Yes, you can concentrate and work hard and you have energy, but it makes me anxious, weird and mean. I called everywhere I possibly could yesterday because I felt my life was falling apart. The depression and weirdness that follows withdrawal is a hell I don't wish on anyone. I am trying my very best, but I feel I have to hide from everyone and not tell them how much I hurt. Does anyone have any suggestions? Please tell me you can get off of this garbage by yourself. index.html 06-02-2005, 01:52 PM Well, first, stimulants shouldn't be stopped cold-turkey. They need to be weaned. Your discontinuation syndrom will be much more comfortable if you go back on them and then wean gradually. Ask your doc for weaning instructions. Good luck! |
