Stan Fyfe 01-01-2003, 12:50 PM Can anyone tell me more about fish oils? What they do and what to purchase? Any other natural helpers? Thanks :}) Sponsor Jennita 01-06-2003, 04:31 PM Look for the oils with the EFA's and DHA's listed on the side. Omega oils are supposed to be good for brain, eye and nervous system function. Flax seed oil I have heard is even better. Don't overtake these, though; excess of anything, even good, could have adverse effects so stick to recommended amounts. There have also been reports out there that calcium has good effects and is calming. Also great for PMS. My little niece who has ADHD sometimes is literally "bouncing off the walls" & about 10 minutes after eating a handful of raw almonds, she calms down. I have found eating Brazil nuts can help me focus and make me feel more clear headed and energetic (I'm not hyperactive and like many people with predominately inattentive type I feel spacy and foggy. Brazil nuts eaten before teaching my night class help me think more clearly. I am thinking of trying the fish oil supplement Efelex. I think a good quality herbal store should sell them. I haven't tried them myself yet. [This message has been edited by Gingerwoman (edited 01-15-2003).] Wil 01-15-2003, 08:08 PM I am having some success with Fish Oils. I started to research my diet to look for some deficiencies. I found many and slowly made changes to my diet. I had some dental issues and stopped eating any kind of nuts and I hate any type of fish. I found a giant hole in my diet and after reading on here and other places, added them to my diet. This was right after Xmas and I recently went to a week long conference, all classroom learning and I had stopped taking my Adderall a week before I left. I was amazed to find I could concentrate and focus completely. NO gaps in attention, no dream world and my mood was very stable. I know this is directly related to my diet change and the addition of Fish Oils. I also take Colostrum and I no longer have any aches in my body and my gums have completely healed. I am down to only 10mg Adderall and plan to eliminate it completely next month after I discuss this with my Doctor. I would never in a million years have believed that my diet could be part of a solution for me. I recognize that my frontal lobes are different than someone without ADD, but didn't know my diet could help me with my focus. I am not a testimonial.. simply someone trying to improve the quality of my life. Wil Markie Mark 01-16-2003, 03:30 PM I swear by my fish oil. I have been on it 18 months now and have been able to greatly reduce my meds. I was in my mid 30's when I was properly diagnosed with ADD. On my original testing I had the hightest scores that my doc had ever seen, so I had it bad. I figured I would be taking meds for the rest of my life. With fish oil I may soon be able to stop all my meds. I didn't happen over night it took months to see the improvements I have experienced. I do recomend that you make sure which ever brand you try to make sure that it filtered of the heavy metals, some cheep brands are not. HumanSpirit 02-02-2003, 02:11 AM There seems to be some good advice to this topic of the omega3 fatty acids. Thanks for the information jay22 02-02-2003, 01:40 PM I have malicularly distilled fish oil tablets. Is that the right one ? Each of that has 1100mg of fish body oils. EPA + DHA = 500mg. How many should I take in a day and at what times ? Any recommendations ...? thanks HumanSpirit 02-02-2003, 05:19 PM Jay22 I don't know of any recommmended doses for a person however I have read that 1-2 Tbsp daily. Men: 1.5 grams per 2700 calorie diet. Women: 1.1 grams per 2000 calorie diet. I think each person is different and I always use the rule of thumb that doing less is better then more for myself. |
