I have PCOS and pregnancy is possible. I have not been pregnant yet but I just started trying to. The main thing is whether or not you ovulate (I know I am because it just so happened when I went to the dr I was-she could see it happening on the ultrasound). If you do not ovulate (you can try an OPK if you're not sure), Glucophage is very successful in allowing those with PCOS to ovulate. I do not ovulate (usually) unless I take Gluc.

How did you find out that you have PCOS? I am going to get tested becasue I think I may have it. Yes.. I ovulate but this monh I missed my cycle and when I was tested it was a BFN as with my blood test. I have a appointment for the endocrine. also but not untill April I am hoping Planed P. sould test me sooner. Tell me more please. What are your side affects I have acne bad and lots of hair growth and irregular cycles that have been controlled over the years with BCP but I stopped in Nov. becasue DH and I are ttc.

The side affects I had were weight gain, a lot of hair growth, somewhat irregular periods. A dr I was seeing suspected it and told me I could get tested for it if I wanted, but actually told me there was no benefit to getting tested since there is "no cure". While it is true there is no cure, it is extremely beneficial to know if you have PCOS. Many women who have this end up getting diabetes (if they don't already have it), as well as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc. Pregnancy is very possible. Do a search on PCOS and you will find some good PCOS sights which will prove to you that pregnancy is very, very possible. There is a higher risk of miscarriage with PCOS'rs. They say if you take glucophage, it brings the risk of miscarriage back to "normal" limits (maybe even slightly lower).
My dr tested me by taking blood (a hormonal imbalance is also an indicator of PCOS) and by doing a transvaginal ultrasound...women who have PCOS have a string of pearl like cysts on their ovaries.
Do not panic! Another thing - if you do not feel your dr is knowledgable on PCOS, get another dr. My first doctor would not even put me on glucophage. She said there was no need as my insulin levels were supposedly normal. Many experts now believe that those with PCOS always have insulin "problems" and by taking gluc. you can delay the onset - or even prevent - of diabetes. The next dr I saw could not believe that my dr did not put me on it!! The dr I ended up seeing was actually a fertility expert as well...you may need to go that route to get proper treatment.
A real good site to look at is www.soulcysters.com. (http://www.soulcysters.com.) Good luck and feel free to ask me questions. I'll answer them if I know them.

My side affects are the same as yours and my husband thinks that I am overeacting but I know that their is something wrong.
What do you do about the hair growth?
I have a endocrine app. in April but I am going to the obgyn tomorrow because my flo has not come down. Only spotting. I am thankful for all of the responses.

plm ... I am fine. When I started on the glucophage (a little over a yr ago), my dr started me on 500mg and a few months later upped me to 1000mgs. I mostly have pretty regular af (usually around 28-29 days, occasionally 32 or 33). The hair growth - shaving. I did try vaniqa but #1 - pretty expensive ($40 for a pretty small tube) and #2 - can't use during pregnancy and everything I read indicated it only works while you're taking it ... the hair growth comes back when you stop it, so I figured why bother.
After my first visit back to my dr (after I started the glucophage), she decided to do a vaginal ultrasound and it just so happened I was ovulating!!! I was soooo excited!!! Just so exciting to know that I could, especially after reading all the problems PCOS'rs have ... that's pretty much the biggest problem is most don't ovulate.
Try not to be nervous. It's not the end of the world. If you do have it, they will just watch you for the different things that PCOS'rs tend to have ... diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc. My dr tests my glucose every year and so far I am OK.
I just had a weird thought that never occurred to me before. I had my cholesterol testing about 6 months ago. My work did a thing where a visiting nurse came in and tested a bunch of stuff .... anyways my cholesteral has always been in "normal" range .... but my numbers have actually improved since the last time it was tested which was BEFORE I was taking glucophage. I wonder if the improvement is due in part to gluco.
Let me know how your dr visit goes. I'll be saying good thoughts for you!! :)

I was really upset today becasue I left work early to go to the doctor and when I arrived they told me the office was closing becasue the doctor called out. I called other locations for Planned Parenthood and they told me none were available so I now have to wait untill Friday. Does the Glu.... help acne like birth control. While on birth control lo-overal everything was O.K except I can't get preg. on bcp's
I feel really sad todday because a friend at my job had a miscarriage and anouther person I know her baby was born with problems and goes in tomorrow for surgery.
It is hard now to think happy thought's I feel really down and sad. I started the day with energy and excitment.

I haven't had too much problems with acne (luckily), but I do not recall reading anything about gluc. helping with it. I believe there are other things that help with it, but it is possible you wouldn't be able to use it during pregnancy.
Keep trying to stay positive. I know it's hard!! Keep me posted and I hope you can get into the dr soon!!

Hey, cheer up! Guess what? I have PCOS (RE called what I have "classic PSO"), and I just found out on Saturday that I am pregnant with my first child! I am 31, have been trying for 19 months, but only 4 months with a reproductive endo. I took glucophage also for six months, 1800 mg / day. This month I got pregnant on 75 ml (one vial) of follistim injectibles per day for 10 days, and then a shot (HCG shot - Ovidrel)to release the eggs from the follicules (i.e. to make me ovulate). Then my husband and I did timed intercourse, and I saw those two pink lines on Saturday, blood test confirmed it on Monday. So, keep your chin up, I am a success story. I think the glucophage made a big difference in the egg quality. I know this is all so scarry!!!!! I have been through so many ups and downs in the last six months, ever since I was diagnosed with PCOS. "Why me?" is the classic question I kept asking myself. It is a journey, but I hope it will be one worth taking. If you don't mind me asking, why are you going to planned parenthood, and not a reproductive endo? Are you trying right now to get PG? Is it an insurance issue (I know a lot of insurances wont cover infertility).
Hope this helped. I have been posting over on the infertility board until this week. Your name sounds familiar, have you tried over there for info on PCOS?

I can't tell me how happy I am to hear your story. That does give me hope. I am going to Planned Parenthood becasue me appointment for the endocrine doc. is not untill April 25 and my flo has not come since Feb 9 and I tested neg. for urine and blood. I don't know for sure if I have pcos but I think that the symtoms I have are similar. I have acne, hair growth, and now irregular periods. I never notice because I was always on birth control. I was pregnant at 16 but that was an ectopic preg. that ended in miscarriage and i was pregnant two years ago that ended in miscarriage but that was because of a lapse in bcp.
JodyC thanks and I am in infertility chat room. I go to both. :round: I am so happy for you please keep me posted. :round:
35andttc thanks for all of your support and advice it really has helped.
