Hi all.
I was just wondering if anyone else has gone through anything similar to what I am going through right now.
I started spotting (very little) on Monday so the dr. got an hcg level and did an ultrasound on Tues. My hcg level was 3842, but they didn't see anything on the u/s (ultrasound) not even a sac. They did both the external and a vagianl u/s and still saw nothing. My doctor was convinced I had a miscarriage, however when the hcg level was taken again on Thur. (2 days later) they had doubled. I went in for another u/s that day and they still saw nothing! Now they are talking about it might being an Ectopic Pregnancy, but I don't reallyfit into that catorgoy of "symptoms" either.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this?
Could I just have really high hcg levels and not be far along enough for them to see anything?

How many weeks are you? That is unusual. I had an ectopic but my HCG level never got that high. What is their next plan of action to figure out what is going on?
I hope that the little bugger is just hiding and I will pray for you!! In the mean time, definately be aware of any signs your body might be trying to give you. If you are having an ectopic pregnancy, the sooner they diagnose you the better. If you have any pain in your shoulders or lower abdomen, whether it be dull or sharp, be sure to call your doctor.
I have always had the understand that if your hcg level doubles that's a great sign. I didn't think it would do that if the pregancy was ectopic. Please let us know how far along you are!

I don't want to give you any bad news, but I've had 3 ectopics. My numbers rose in 2 of them. The level got as high as 8000 in one of the pregnancies. I didn't always have symptoms and when I did they were mild. Please be very careful, as this can be a life threatening situation.
Sometimes your levels can be higher then usual, but that's if you are pregnant with multiple births. Unfortunately, I think they should be able to see a sac or multiple sacs by now, but I could be wrong.

I think I am no further than 4 weeks (maybe less) but with the Hcg levels this high they are thinking I'm much further (although I can safely say I am no more than 4 weeks.. no matter what they say it just isn't possible if you know what I mean...lol)
I am having other symptoms of being pg. My boobs are killiing me! I have that "going to start" pressure still. I have a little bit of morning nausea.... and I basically just "Feel" pregnant.
Btw. Thanks all for the info.

If you are certain that you are no more than 4 weeks, then it would be impossible to see even a sac. I personally had an u/s at 4 weeks, and all that is visible is a splotch - and to see that the machine has to be awsome, and so does the tech. At 4 weeks there is not a sac, only dividing cells. If you are only 4 weeks, then the spotting would coincide with implantation bleeding.
They need to be doing another u/s around 5-6 weeks to see if there is a sac visible then. The HCg numbers being higher than they expect could be anything from twins to just plain high numbers. And, frankly, 9000 is not really all THAT high. I hit something like 12,000+ in the process of a miscarriage.
Now, when we refer to 4 weeks, that is from last menstural period, not conception. The gest. sac is usually visible at 6 weeks pg, or 4 wks post conception.
Hope that helps some!

I just had an ectopic, and my hcg levels got as high as 6,000 but that was at 7 weeks. My levels were not increasing at the rate they were supposed to. My dr. did not have an u/s ordered for me too early because he said if the hcg isn't at least 12,000, then they won't be able to see anything on the u/s. At 4 weeks, I don't believe there is a sac yet. If you are very sure you are only 4 weeks, then the spotting could be implantation bleeding, and spotting can be normal for a lot of women. If you experience heavy bleeding or cramping, let your dr. know right away. I'm not a dr., but I would think at 4 weeks your hcg levels are within a normal range. They should double every 2 days. Usually with an ectopic, the hcg doesn't increase the way it's supposed to. Are you having blood work done every few days to monitor your hcg level?

Had another HCG level yesterday (Saturday) now I'm at 14,000! My doctor has no idea what to do at this point so I'm going in for another u/s on Wed. I'm hoping that they will see something then. I will keep you all posted.
Thank you all for the imput It has really helped keep my hopes up and provide me with some great information.
Thanks again everyone!

oh yeah I wanted to mention... I'm 4 weeks from conception. They can't go by the last day of menstrual cycle becasue I tend to ovulate late. We believe we conceived on April 15 (or later but definetly not before that)
Does that make a difference on any of the info.?
Thanks.

Before I say anything I hope and pray that everything is okay with your baby. With that said...it sounds alot like it could be a blighted ovum. Here is some info on it:
A blighted ovum is the cause of about 50 percent of first-trimester miscarriages. An egg is fertilized and attaches itself to the uterine wall, but the embryo doesn't develop further. Cells develop to form the pregnancy sac, but not the embryo itself. There may be no bleeding to signal a problem; later, though, the woman may notice a brown discharge. She may not realize she has a blighted ovum until her healthcare provider fails to detect a heartbeat or an ultrasound reveals an empty gestational sac.
I am on another board that helps with people that have gone through a miscarriage. Ther reason that I reconized yours as maybe being this is because there is another girl on there going through the same thing and her doctor final told her that it was a blighted ovum. Here is one more thing:
If you have a blighted ovum (empty sac) your HCG levels can and will probably still rise. This does not make the empty sac any better. Your body does not know that the sac is empty, so it keeps on producing the hormones needed to make the womb favorable to pregnancy. That is why a blighted ovum is sometimes called a chemical pregnancy: the chemicals still get produced, but the pregnancy itself is not viable because there is no fetus in the sac.
Now with all that said...if you are really only 4 weeks along then I imagine everything is fine. I'm not usually one to post that things could be wrong, but in this matter it could be bad for them mom to keep going with this. Please I pray that everything is okay with your baby...I know the feeling of having a to go through the pain of losing a child....I hope i did not upset anyone.

I too will stil be praying for you. Let's just pray it's a multiple birth pregnancy and that's why they haven't seen anything yet. This happened to a friend of mine. She actually ended up miscarrying one of the pregnancies, but the other one is fine. Just make sure your docs know for sure before they do anything to interfere with the pregnancy.

I agree about the waiting....from what I have read most people wait until they are around 8-12 weeks before taking any steps. Good Luck and you are in my prayers.

Young, It totally sounds like it is just too early to see anything. Please do not let the doc's tell you something is wrong without proof. I am surprised they even did an u/s that early. Bleeding in this stage is totally common too! There are sooo many that have had early bleeding and it was either just from implantation or something else that was not a big deal.
Please keep us updated and I pray all is well with you and your little blessing!!!!

Hi everyone!
Just wanted to give you guys an update...
They found the baby!
The little bugger was hiding.
Apparently I have an "abnormally" shaped uterus. Anywhoo, It may be tiny but it's there!
I am only about 5 & 1/2 weeks, my levels were just really high. They haven't completely ruled out a multible birth, but said it didn't look like it right now.
The heartbeat was slower than thye liked (only 82) but it could have been the angle they were getting it. I am still concidered a "unusally" pregnancy and still need to be watched closely.
I go in for another ultrasound in a few days, I'll keep you guys posted if anything changes.
I just wanted to thank you all for helping me get through this. The advise and caring was wonderful.
Thanks again.
