any committed parent worries about the effects. Some need it to survive. So it makes it all worth it. You do what you have to do as a parent for your children. That is why we all on here to learn as much as possible from each other.

of course loving parents have those concerns...we all do the best we can with the information we have. We can't judge each other.

I have offend wondered about the long term effects. It was the main reason I waited putting him on meds. But finily had to because of school. I sure hope it was the right choice. I worrie about liver damage down the road..

Clayton,

I understand the pressure put on parents today regarding school. But it is still your choice and maybe in awhile your kid could slowly wean off the drugs and find other avenues. The need to pass thru grades 1-12 is obvious, but C's and D's will accomplish this as well as A's and B's. It doesn't mean your child will fail in life, especially if that special interest is found and pursued as career. There is life after grade school...

All parents worry about the long term affect of their choices on their children. We decided to medicate, first with stimulants and now with Straterra, which is brand new on the market. With any new drug, you watch it very closely.

Since my son is so ADD (e.g. can't dress himself for school) that he can't function without medication, it came down to looking at the long term effect of not medicating him-- lost educational opportunities, low self-esteem, no friends, and wasted potential, to name a few. We felt the long term effect of those things was worse on him than the potential long term effects of medication.

Also when I look at the new drugs available since he was diagnosed 4 years ago, and how many different drugs he has used in that time frame, he hasn't been on anything remotely "long term". I expect the drug he is using today will be replaced by something better in the next couple years, if not sooner. I don't believe it will be long enough to be "long term" where the loss to his self- esteem and education certainly would be.
