HELP ME! o.k. we thought my son was dyslexic. He only has trouble in reading, writing and spelling. Minor focusing and staying on task. Absolutely no outbursts, bad attitude or anything like that, no behavior or social problems. He ONLY has trouble with reading writing and spelling - staying on task. He's a math wiz. The teacher thinks that maybe we should try medication. Does anyone have any ideas about a medication that will help me in these areas. I don't want anything that will sedate or make hyper. I just want a medication that will help him focus without all of the weird side effects. Right now, I was leaning toward Strattera, but after reading some of your posts, I'm a little scared.

Hey - Don't be scared to try Strattera. These boards sometimes scare me too. My doc told me that this medicine would help my son focus better. My son also takes concerta for ADHD. He's only been on the strattera for 2 weeks and our doc said it would take 4 to 6 weeks to see if it truly helps. We've had NO major issues. He eats well and sleeps well. I think it's worth a shot, just make sure they give the right dosage for your child's weight. If at anytime you get real concerned about any side affects you may see. Consult the doc. My son was tired the first 2 days and seemed to overheat to the sweating point the first 2 days but those side affects are gone. Doc said they were normal until the med is in his system and his body is use to it!

Will you PLEASE keep me posted on his success. I would be more than happy to give you my email. Why can't you take him off of the Concerta?

What has your son been diagnosed with? Without a clear cut diagnosis in black and white I would not start my child on any medications. Medications should be used only when a proper diagnosis has been made through proper testing at a center that tests for disorders such as ADD/ADHD etc.

Thank you for the advise. You're right. I have had him tested for dyslexia. The person that tested called me and said "he's not dyslexic", he has a focusing problem, then she said, I may want to talk to my doctor about getting him on medication.
