It is a VERY stuff decision to med or not to med. I guess it is up to you. My husband and I didn't want to med our son either. Unfortunately, where we live we don't have a whole lot of choices for schooling. The way we went: We sought out a doctor that deals with behavioral issues and learned sooo much about ADD/ADHD. As your child, our child is Very smart - very common in these types of children. Maybe almost too smart! They need more stimulation, need to be challenged more. Our doctor even helped give my childs teacher more information and sent her techniques for helping my child in the class room, it didn't work. Other kids and parents started to label my child as "bad behaved" Sad but true in the society we live. {this was k-garten} Finally we gave in and started witht he meds. and WOW what a difference it had made in our child. He is not dopey or druggy acting (our main concern), but his self-esteem Jumped!! and in the class he is able to stay on task, get his work done, neatly!!! without all his little sound effects and restlessness he had before and without little comments he would make before. We sought help thru 3 different doctors. We started at a physcologist @ a counceling center, then family doctor finally with a third opionion with a doctor that deals in behaviorial issues and all the answers being the same we finally started on meds. My advice: Get as much information as you can, try everything then realize meds are not all that bad. One of the doctors said: "If you child seems drugged and out of it, he is over medicated" His doctors monitor his health and frequently get reports from his teachers and us on his progress. - Hang in there - it is tough but your not alone!!!

May I suggest Fish Oil. I am an adult with ADHD although the H part isn't as bad as it use to be. But with fish oil "Omega 3 fatty acids" I have been able to reduce my meds by 35%. Now with fish oil it can take a couple of weeks before you notice any change and the full improvement may take 3-6 months. and Omega 3's most people dont get enough as it is. It is one of the GOOD fats. Now with fish oil make sure you get one that has been filtered for heavy metals. You may be lucky and not have to medicate him when he gets older.

Since you don't want to try medication then the next step is to persue counseling with a doc that deals with ADD/ADHD children. The doc will need to be one that works WITH his school teacher and does phone consults with her to be sure that he is hitting the right problems as well helping the child. Call your regular doc for a referal to someone who deals with ADD/ADHD and get some counseling sessions going to help with his problems.

Hi every one.
I am so glad that I am not the only one,I don't feel alone I leave in Seattle area (Wa)if there any places that I can get fish oil,I wonder the fish oil would work on younger kid,my boy is only 6 years old he is going to be first grader this comming school year.We are going to see a child phycologist which who specilizes on adhd
and we are thinking that we should try alternative method instead of med and let see what happen, and we'll go from there.

What might help people find fish oil is to know that it is often called Omega 3. Get a good quality one and buy the one that is Omega 3, rather than the Omega that has more numbers. It takes a good month before you'll notice anything, if it's going to do anything at all. Before giving up, try another month on another brand. I have to use one brand to notice any affect and my son has to use another. Neither brand was effective enough to replace meds for either of us. My son has such a small improvement with it, it's probably not worth taking for ADD. It does marginally better for me. Both of are use a full dose of Straterra with it, but have continued with Omega 3 anyway because it's good for you.

Behavior therapy has very good results in children with ADD, but I know it is expensive. I suggest you visit the following link:
