I've read a lot of books/articles on ADD/ADHD and "Driven to Distraction" by Dr. Hallowell (I think that's it - starts with an H anyway) is by far the best in my opinion. He a doctor and psychiatrist who has ADD himself and the book is incredibly accurate and encouraging.

I personally haven't read a better book about AD/HD than Healing ADD by: Daniel Amen MD and a close second would be driven to distraction.

The hands-down best adhd book I have read is,
Right-Brained Children in a Left-Brained World by Jeffery Freed and Laurie Parsons. The reason I like this book so much is because it offers positive solutions to dealing with attention weaknesses and brings focus on the strengths of visual right-brained learners. These kids are not "disordered", only different. The "disorder" is a negative label which is damaging to a child's self-esteem. It points out that many of our worlds most innovative and brilliantly creative people would have been considered "disordered" by today's DSM-IV standards.

A book I like is called "The Attention Deficit Child". It's a paperback which has good information. I got it at Eckerd. I also wanted to share with you some recommendations which were made to me:

Here are two items worth your time. "The Link between Add & Addiction: Getting the Help You Deserve" by Wendy Richardson, MA, published by Pinon Press, ISBN #1-57683-004-7. The second item is "Give Your ADD Teen a Chance" by Lynn Weiss, Ph.D., published by Pinon Press, ISBN # 08910-99778.

“Driven to Distraction,”and the sequel, “Answers to Distraction.” Both on New York Times Best Seller list. Good for both kids and adults with ADD and ADHD> I would write more, but I just do not have the patience for it right now.

I've read almost all of the above books and they were very good. However, I am looking for a good book about young children (maybe 4-8 years) with ADHD. I understand that it is a lifelong problem, but I can not look that far ahead right now. I'm still digesting my 6 year old's disorder, and wondered if anyone knew of a book mostly about children, because that is all I can handle right now. Thanks

The book "Driven to Distraction" I found boring and had trouble reading but "Answers to Distraction" I liked because i saw people like me in the answers, but by far the best adult book is "Adult ADD" by Thomas A. Whiteman,PhD,and Michele Novotni,PhD. This held my intrest and is reader friendly. If a section did'nt pertane to me i passed it by.Helped me greatly.

Can anyone help me with good ADHD books for children? We have Shelley, The Hyperactive Turtle, which is OK, but when you have a 6 year old with ADHD who cannot sit still, it was kind of long. Can anyone recommend a good one? Thanks, MC

Biological Treatments for Autism and PDD by Dr. William Shaw AND Children With Starving Brains by Dr. Jacquelyn McCandless. These books deal primarily with autism but autism really is an extreme form of ADD/ADHD.

Also try, Is This Your Child? by Dr. Doris Rapp.

I recently read a great article by Thomas Phelan, Ph.D. entitled "Lessns from the Trenches: Managing the Teen with AD/HD." This article first appeared in Attention! magazine Spring 1998. It's a short read which works well for us AD/HD parents.

Someone mentioned "You Mean I'm Not Lazy, Stupid or Crazy?!" That is the only book I've read on ADD/ADHD, and I found it VERY good and helpful. I even read it before meds and it wasn't that hard to get through, with the way they set it up. Highly recommended.

A good read for kids ( ages 8-12) and their parents is Joey Pigza Swallowed a Key by Jack Gantos. As a parent with a 9 year old son with ADHD I found it very insightful. Even though it's a fiction book.
