I am a 24 yr-old male. For the past 5-6 years I have experienced occasions where my face will flush, usually mid-morning or mid-afternoon for no reason. Episodes can last from half an hour to a few hours.
I have been seeing a dermatologist for years, and we have not been able to control it. It is not rosacea, it is simply flushing in the cheeks. I've tried Inderal (propranolol), but it seems to be ineffective.
This is uncomfortable and embarrassing. Has anyone had similar experiences and know of any possible treatments? I am so tired of it.
Please help.

Hi,
I have had a similar problem with my scalp and forehead. I went to several doctors(derms.,allergists, arthritis docs) and even had a punch biopsy that revealed nothing. I thought back to when the flushing started and it began when I changed shampoo. After much experimenting with different soaps and shampoos, I decided it is caused by a reaction to an additive in the various shampoos and also soaps.
I finally found an herbal shampoo and soap at a health food store that did not cause a reaction. What was so odd the flushing never happened immediately---maybe the next morning and afternoon and only to my head and forehead and not every day. I even used baby shampoo and I flushed.
You may just have a similar problem ----worth checking out.
God Bless---Harry

Harry - that it "never happened immediately" and "not everyday" and only in certain areas sounds exactly like my problem -- and also the reason I ruled out my soap. I've been using the same facial cleanser (Neutrogena Non Drying Cleanser) for 6-7 years, slightly longer than the flushing problem. I'll experiment and see if that's it...
Thanks so much for sharing.

Hello, my case isn't as bad as your's. it use to be when I was younger. I still get facial flushes though but not nearly as bad, I can't tell you why though, sorry. I don't think it's something ou can quite control. I now this will probably sound stupid to you, But well first of all i guess i should telly you i''m a girls and i don't know if you limit this to a girl thing but i noticed that when i started going tanning like in tanning beds, the more tan i got the less my face would show my red cheeks. I know this is only a short term effect though, unless you have no problem going tanning like two times a week.
Well get back to me , i would like to know if you have found out other ways, or got any new info from your doctors.

I also tend to think it is internal and beyond control, as my skin has always been sensitive to begin with. Hoping to "outgrow" it, 6 years later I'm getting discouraged.
For now I'll try new soaps and let you know what happens. Thanks for your input!

I have had hot flashes since I was 32.
I found out I had a very low thyroid. I can
no longer drink alcohol or my face will turn
beat red.
I would advise anyone with facial flushing
that seems like a hot flash to have a thyroid
profile done.
My daughter has had facial flushing or
hot flashes since she was 19. At 20, they
discovered she had a slightly low thyroid.
She takes Paxil to control hers and any
discomfort, anxiety, that accompanies them.
She has a hard time waking up on Paxil. She
goes from Dr. to Dr. hoping to get to the
cause. She hopes to stop taking the Paxil
someday. Will check back to this board to
see if anyone else has had similar experiences.

To WALLSAL55, when I was very young I began having the red flushing cheeks that you mentioned. At age 32 I had hypothyroidism. Looking back, I am quite sure I had thyroid disease for years. Before I finally got a good specialist I went through a really bad time, as one doctor wanted to put me on an MAO. Your regular doctor may not understand the disease well enough. I am very concerned for your daughter. To my knowledge Paxil is not used for thyroid disease. Thyroid disease is often mistaken for anxiety disorders, bi-polar conditions and more. My specialist and any of the other doctors I have ever seen use Synthroid, a generic version, or a natural version for thyroid disease. The real problem occurs when you do not have a doctor that understands the disease and does not give you enough or gives you to much Synthroid. (Both has happened to me.) Then they think you have, as in my case an anxiety disorder and begin treatment for that. If that happens you lose your life because they begin to medicate you. You said your daughter has a problem waking up. Your daughter most likely is walking around in a semi conscious state all the time.
I think you should ask some questions and do some reading to be on the safe side. A thyroid condition can make a person LOOK LIKE they have an anxiety disorder, bi-polar and a lot of other things. I am not saying that she does not need the Paxil for something, I'm just saying that is not what the dozens of doctors that I have gone to give for thyroid disease. I currently take .75mg day one and two, then I take .2mg on the third day, at which point I began again. A really good doc can work with her on the dose until she feels good again. Good Luck!

Do you get diarrhoea, asthma, or oedema (swelling of legs or other part of body)?
If so, rarer things such as carcinoid syndrome might be worth looking in to.
It is very very rare, and I have never seen a case in all my years experience.
Good luck

Hi everyone - I see no one has been on this particular subject for a LONG time!
I'm not sure if I'm in the right group...
My problem is I have a very warm forehead all the time - I don't think it's rosacea, although I do have oil nose area, as well as forehead, and the area around the sides of nose are dry and slightly red, but nothing obvious.
My forehead is ALWAYS warm - I can't stand when I'm in a heated room, or the heat comes on in a car. This has been going on for about 8 months now.
I've had other medical problems during the time - migraines, which I got rid of, as well as a reaction to Lipitor.
But during the whole while, the warm forehead (and my eyes sometimes) has always been there.
Does anyone have ANY suggestions???
My medical doctor can't figure it out..and yes, I've had ALL the tests - brain scan, CT scan, MRI, X-ray, EMG yada yada yada..
Thanks in advance!
Mark
