Hi all. My doctor recently put me on Elavil for my RLS symptoms. Has anyone else taken this med for this reason? Does it work? All replies will be appreciated. Thanks :)

Hi,
I used Elavil for a short time. It caused urinary retention and I had to stop it. I also told the doctor that it really wasn't helping my legs much.
I read articles from the RLS.org site and asked my doc about trying other meds. He gave me Klonopin and I have been on it for some time now. It helps a lot and the only side effect I have is sleeping later. So to fix that, I take my pills earlier in the evening.
To some people on the outside, RLS may not seem like such a big issues, but when you are the one suffering from it... it is awful.
Good Luck

I have been on Elavil for awhile it really seems to help. I also take klonopin and Tylenol Codeine in the day for my restless legs. Elavil makes me very sleepy and I don't get night sweats hardly as much. That is due to my Periomenopause symptoms. So it helps both things. Some people say it makes restless leg worse but not for me. I hope it helps you.

my husband takes elavil for chronic pain and to help him sleep. recently started with RSL and the only thing that seems to help is klonopin.
shell1---i took 25 mg. years ago for pain and sleep. always made me sweat. i am menopausal now and looking for something to help with the night sweats. has elavil really helped? have you gained weight on it?

I am pretty sure it's the Elavil that is helping the night sweats I know it helps me sleep but, I also started taking soy tablets around the same time I started the Elavil. Whichever one it is it's working I don't get them nearly as bad as I used to. It is some sort of antidepressant and I have heard that antidepressants really help with menopausal problems. I take two soy tablets a day, two Klonopines and one Elavil at night, also BC pills and tylenol Codeine in the day because it is the only thing that really helps restless legs in the day that doesn't knock me out. I might have gained a little weight only because I actually started to eat. Between the restless leg and periomenopause I would just lose my appetite completely. But I try to walk every day overall it really has helped me.

I was put on Elavil for migraines and it seemed to help for a while. But it did not mix well with the RLS, I was going crazy and had to get off. I take Requip for the RLS and it is great when it works. I also take clonazepam when needed. Good luck!
