I've had this problem for many years so know what you are going through. I don't like taking pills so have found my own treatment. First, I've discovered it can be brought on by almost anything involving my lower back - gardening, riding in cars, sitting in a recliner chair, etc.. When the legs begin to act up, I have a plain, round bar stool I sit on and leg my legs dangle. I lean forward with my elbows on the counter and relax in that position for just a few minutes. I then walk down the hall climb in bed and go right to sleep for the rest of the night! I am convinced that my restless leg syndrome is caused by the lower vertebra pressing on a nerve. I have tired everything else and this is the best of two things that works for me(except medication, such as valium which I take on rare occasions). When I wake up in the middle of the night with this problem, I don't want to do anything that will wake me up further so sitting quietly in the dark keeps me in the sleepy mode. Hope you can find something that works for you.

Keep the legs, Keep the legs...LOL Our family has this problem in three generations; and it only seems to appear after going to bed! My MIL gets up & walks till her's ease. My daughter rides her bike (says it doesn't help her legs but tires her so that nothing can keep her awake..) and me, I get up & get in the jacuzzi - works every time. I guess everyone just has to find their own thing. Good Luck, Bayne

Keep your legs! I have RLS in my arms. For two or three years I thought I was going insane. My right arm itched "to the bone", only at night, finally after getting no more than a couple of hours of sleep a night for two years, my husband "made" me go to the doctor. After testing me for everything, and not being able to find anything specific on the tests, he gave me a prescription for Mirapex. I was diagnosed with having RLS in my arms. I am now able to sleep through most nights! My arm doesn't itch and twitch all night and the tingly feeling in my legs is nearly gone. I am on a dose of .25mg per day, taken right before bedtime. Some people require more and some less. I was frankly amazed! If I forget to take my meds before bed, I sometimes have relapses and get up in the night with the twitches! Sometimes it makes me feel a little foggy in the morning, but nothing serious. Ask your doctor, it's worth a try anyway.
