If I take the antihistamine Benadryl I will have severe symptoms, not only in my legs but also in my back and arms. Has this happened to anyone else and do you know why this drug could cause such a response?

In case anyone does not know a lot of the over the counter sleep aids have the same ingredient as benadryl.
Just thought this info may help some people who think taking a tylenol PM helps with RLS, when it may actually make it worse.

Virtually all antihistamines will aggravate restless legs. The effect on your system will differ from person to person; however, it is almost certain that taking any antihistamine will cause you problems. If you are on RLS medications, then the impact may be somewhat less. Go to:

Did you hear anything on Zyrtec? I have to take it for my severe allergies? Any help would be appreciated

i can't take any antihistamines either or my legs will avt up. Also I found out that I can't take any over the counter sleep aids such as tylonol pm, nytol or sominex. I have been suffering with rls for 30 years now, ever since the birth of my second child. My father has it , I have it, my daughter has it and we also believe my 6 year old granddaughter has it.

I have taken Zyrtec with no rls reaction. I now take allegra because the other made me a little sleepy and it is great.

Thanks SuzyB. I stopped taking for Zyrtec for one night and slept better. I am attempting the second night so we will see if the absence of Zyrtec will make a difference. I did notice that if I exercise my leggs with weight resistance i.e. nautilus machines and workout on the stair machine it helps.

I have also found that Benedryl, Nytol, Excedrin PM etc. make my legs crazy. However I can take the antihistimine Chlortymetron without any bad effects. My secret to sleeping after umpteen years of suffering and medications too numerous to list?...Permax and a good excercise bike.
