Hi! I am going to have a sleep study done to see if I have RLS. I am just learning about it. It have severe insomina and cannot sleep without sleeping pills but that alone does not guarantee a good night sleep. I have found even with the sleeping pills I toss and turn all night long especially in the morning hours. Does this constitute RLS or is it just jerking of the legs or could it be tossing and turning (restlessness) too? Anyone who has it could post any info I would really appreciate it.

Looking for any help and suggestions because this is hard to live with.

Thanks!

I don't know what RLS is either. I ran into this board trying to help a friend get information about her back problems. But, I think I may have this because I get spasms (or something) in my legs only when I go to bed. They are very annoying, and sometimes I can't get to sleep, so I pace until I finally get tired enough. I noticed on another message that they talk about antihistamines aggravating this condition, and I have awful allergies so I take Claritin & Benadryl every day! I'm going to poke around some more....

I am not a doctor, but I have had restless leg syndrome for as long as I can remember. Spasms do not indicate that you have RLS. Just tossing and turning does not indicate it either. The tell tale sign of RLS occurs during periods of inactivity mostly. When you have been still long enough to become very relaxed and somewhat drowzy (yet still awake), strange sensations (described as a "crawling" sensation in the muscle tissue) occur in an arm or a leg. It is not painful but uncomfortable enough to want to shake the limb to help dissipate the symptom. Unlike a spasm, the shaking is mostly a voluntary reaction to avoid the strange sensation. My RLS is further compounded by a similar condition called Periodic Limb Movements of Sleep (PLMS). This happens during periods of unconciousness and for me, had interrupted my sleep enough to wake me up once every three minutes on average without me realizing it. No wonder I felt tired. It sounds to me like you do not have RLS, but may have the similar PLMS. Get the sleep study done. Stroke

I'm NOT dgrams, I'm her granddaughter. This happens to me often. I'll be sitting in class, and (since our classes are so long) I'll be really relaxed. Then I'll start to feel almost as if something is climbing (something meaning a spider or another type of creepy.) up my leg, and I'll have to move it to attempt to make it stop. But it never works. I get weird looks from my classmates all the time, but I never knew what was causing it. Could this be RLS? This guy kind of reminds me of how it is when this happens> http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/dance.gif

"The uncontrollable urge to move your legs or arms". I find that this a good explanation of RLS. This can happen in bed, while sitting (bad for the movie theater, concerts and airplanes)

Finally, an answer! I have had this twitching and pulling of my legs, like a nervousness for most of my life, when im sitting still, alot before bedtime. I happen to come across this website and Im not crazy! Thank goodness! I am on depression medication Effexor and in my reading I think that this is probably worsening it.

I have RLS really bad and Im not sure if it helps but I find when I drink more milk in a day than usual, I dont have the restless legs at night. I drank 4 glasses one evening in about 3 hours and I had no trouble with my legs at night. I have also read that it has to do with lack of iron and B12. Hope this helps.

I have had RLS and PLM for as long as I can remember...the only way that I used to explain that sensation in my legs when i was a kid was "my legs are laughing". It is awful! I can't tell you how many nights my poor dear husband has walked the halls of the house with me because I cannot sleep...and I kick him all night...lol
The doctor put me on mirapex...it works great...i don't take it like i should...only when i get the symptoms now...but it still works. I still get the leg jerking, that will not go away with anything i do, i don't realize that i am doing it, but i do not ever ever get a resrful nights sleep.

I have rls too, the majority of the tingling sensation is in my legs and arms, but I also have it in my face (eyes, ears, chin, cheeks). I've only recently been diagnosed and am taking synapex (spelling??) but my doctor is switching me slowly to myrapex. The medicine seems to help but every so often for no apparent reason the symptoms get worse. But knowing what I have has helped me deal with the discomfort. I thought I was going crazy at first.

With my sleep study, I entered the hospital and they took me to very nice comfortable hotel looking room. then they applied lotion and attached wires to my legs, head,limbs,etc....I read a while and then went to sleep. In the morning they woke me up...disconnected the wires and I went home. painless...efficient...and that is how I found out I had RLs...jerry

I am very curious about this RLS. Years ago I dated this man slept on his stomach and would insesantly bend and drop his leg against the bed in his (sleep?) It used to make me INSANE!!! Looking back, I do recal his legs in constant bouncing motion while he was sitting. I will be mortified if this is a result of a condition that I was totally insensitive about! Don't hold back, let me have it... does that sound possible?

you r going to have to be mortified. I have had RLS since I was about 3 and my legs constantly bounce and move while sitting. I can NEVER sit motionlessly. I am on Permax and Vicoden at night to sleep but it is getting worse during the day. I would describe it as the never ending need to stretch my legs arms and hands.

Take care all

I have found that in the evenings if my legs start jumping and twitching, if I take some calcium pills my legs soon calm down.

I'm taking effexor too. I haven't seen or heard anything related to RLS. Can you say what you read, heard, whatever? I'm very interested.

Just located this article and thought it might be of interest to this group. Researchers have identified a gene they think may be responsible for this syndrome:

I have TOS...Thoracic Outlet Syndrome and RLS...I just started on neurontin and it has helped both conditions.

I dont remember who said that RLS isnt painful doesnt have it very bad because I sit up nights(before new med)crying.

When you cant find any relief for hours then it turns to pain.

I have a funny(it wasnt at the time)story that just happened the other night.

I have been on the neurontin for about 2 weeks for the TOS.My husband noticed that my legs were not bothering me like they had been.I thought it was a fluke. You know it just happened to not be bothering me for 2 weeks.lol

Anyway the other night I could feel the RLS sitting in and my shoulder(TOS) was hurting real bad.I sat shaking, rubbing, and stamping my feet for awhile with no relief.Things got worse as time went on and the next thing I knew I was crying from the pain in my shoulder and legs(mostly my legs).

My husband was all upset because he couldnt help me and didnt know what else to do.Well it all lasted about 3 hrs and then it settled down.I had weakness in my arms and legs so for about another hr I stayed in bed.

Well I needed a drink and thought it would do me good to get it myself. After I got me something to drink and I was walking back to the bed room when something caught my eye on the kitchen table. You would have to see the table because it is so loaded down with everything that doesnt get put up.lol I think they call that a catch all.lol

Anyway I caught something out of the corner of my eye on the table and screamed......I forgot to take my pills!!!!!I missed my afternoon dose and didnt know it.lol I felt so stupid, but now I know that the neurontin helps the RLS and the TOS.lol I also learned that it either doesnt build up in you system or last very long one or the other.

When the RLS started that day I had missed my afternoon dose by about 3 hrs and all hell broke lose.lol So 7 hrs had passed before I even knew I had missed a dose.I hope after I have been on it awhile and get the dose straight then if I miss a dose it wont be a big deal.lol

I found till about 2 months ago that hot baths helped. You might give it a try.

I'm sorry that anyone has to put up with RLS, BUT, I'm very glad I found this board.
What everyone is talking about is very much what I am feeling, that urge that my leg just has to move. Along with pain and/or burning. Thanks for listening,

Sparky

It's now 5:48 AM and I am still awake. Took a sleeping pill about an hours ago, but, so far nothing. RLS has reared it's ugly head two nights in a row. I don't get it very often, but when I do it's absolutely miserable. Jerking legs, feeling the need to move them, weakness in legs and shoulders. I also suffer from a type of traumatic epilepsy that manifests itself as migraines. But, I suffer from RLS years before the crash, so I don't know if they are related. I am not on any meds for RLS. I'm on so many different meds that the VA is reluctant to prescribe more. This is my first time on this board and I am amazed that so many people have RLS. I used to think I was losing my mind. Guess not (at least not about RLS).
