don't worry, you are not abnormal! my friend gets it so bad that she has to stay home from school, she vomits and gets a fever and pains all over. you are *not* alone! if they are that bad you should mention it to your doctor, just to see what s/he says.

ok, for the past 3 years i had no problems w/cramps along w/my time. but starting in june/july of this summer, i started getting MASSIVE cramps. it hurt sooooooooooo bad. on my 3rd day of school i started, and i was in such pain and faint (im pretty sure i was quite pale) that i ended up going home from school, and when i was home i could only lay on my right side. i had to pester to make me an appt for her gynecologist. she made my appt later that day. i went (the appt was for like 2 wks later :() and the doc gave me prescription strength midol type of meds. last time of the month, they helped tremendously! i was in no pain, and my doc put me on bcp. id suggest goin to the doc and talkin to them about what u could do. trust me, its worth it. ok, sry if this is tmi or i rambled off subj, but thats my idea. :) hope this helps.

You need to see the doc and get some medication for severe cramps. Women do not need to suffer with severe menstrual cramps and should see the doc for help.

Its not normal but it is for a lot of women.

After an age of suffering with this agony the crunch point was me at a clients house while she was out, i was meant to be working. The pain completely over took my body, causing all over body sweats. So imagine the scenario, im taking off my clothes as i crawl along the floor crying, crawl up the stairs because i vaguely remember seeing some paracetemol in the bathroom. I find the tablets, take two and within 10 minutes u would never have believed what had taken place minutes earier. So i manage to get myself back in check again, clothes back on everything looking normal, fortunately we were friends and when she walked back in and i told her the story she thought it was hilarious.

Point of the story? why put up with the pain when u can pop a pill and it goes! Been my policy ever since.

Pill popping is all very well, but it is only treating the symptoms rather than the cause. If you want to get rid of the problem for good, you need to find the cause and solve that. If not, then the symptoms will keep returning every month and you will continue to pill pop to deal with the symptoms rather than the cause.

The choice is yours though, but I know what I'd rather do.

Good point Sarah. It was sadly missed by me when I posted. This is what going to the doc should have meant in my post. See the doc to find out what is causing the cramps so that he can either prescribe something or do whatever is needed to eliminate them.

I started having really bad cramps about a year ago. I mean bad. So bad that I had to go to the doctor becuase I couldn't even function anymore. Well, it turns out that I was just ovulating. Apparently, women start ovulating at different times, and sometimes one of the side affects is really bad cramping. They just gave me some pain relievers in the hospital. But whenever they get really bad I just take some tylenol for women. I just started using it like 3 months ago, but it works. Also, you could try a hot water bottle. Hold a hot water bottle on your abdomen, right where you feel the worse pain, and that will ease it some. Somebody told me also, that when you are having bad cramps the best thing you can do is to move around. Try not to lay down, or sit in a little ball. I don't know if it's a mental thing, like if your moving you won't think about the cramps, or if it really works, but it's worth a try.

Hey, I've had the same problem ever since i started my period in 6th grade. Last year I went to the doctor and she put me on the pill. I know it works for some people to relieve pain and make your period lighter/shorter. I kept forgetting to take the pill (oops hehe) so I went to a different doctor and he put me on perscription Motrin. I would deffinantly reccomend this to you. It is stronger than an IBprofen (like taking 5 or 6 of them) but without all the nasty chemicals and stuff so it wont eat away at your stomache or anything.

luv and hugs,

I used to get nasty nasty cramps where I would throw up all the time from the pain. My weight would fluctuate because I couldn't keep anything down. I told my dr. and he put me on the pill, though there's other things you can be put on. Prescription anti-inflammatories like Naproxen are common, and they work just grrrrrrrrreat. You only have to take them when you have your pains, and they last a long time.

Avoid taking anything with a narcotic in it though, because the real problem is from inflammation. NSAIDs are your friend!

I used to get cramps really bad and no over the counter pain reliever would work so I went to my doctor and she advised to take 2 advil three times a day every day about 3 days before your period is about to start this blocks the hormones that cause the cramps to not build up..in my case it didn't work so she put me on the pill for the last 4 years I have been on the pill but my cramps are still there just more bearable to where I can take 2 advil and they are fine. Just talk to your Doc and see what they say some people have different ways of treating them. See what your doc says.

Hey,
I know exactly what you mean! I get cramps so bad that I throw up, and can just lay in bed all day. They make me feel so weak that I can't even cry sometimes. If your pretty regular, two or three days before you start, take like advil and then when you start,( I usually start in the morning when I wake up) if your regular like that then take something stronger like Midol that is just for cramps. Also, a heating pad works WONDERS!!! Just be careful and keep a watch on the heat because it can scald you. I usually put it on med to warm up and then put it back down on low. If you can stand it, when you start hurting, if your laying on your stomach, try wiggling your feet back and forth. I know it sounds ridiculus but it works for me!? I hope all this helps. I know it is horrible pain and i wouldn't wish it on anyone. If that all doesn't help, see a doc. could be something like endometreosis or somthing like that. Good Luck :)

Wow this is bringing back not-so-good memories! :) I have the same problem, only on the first day of my period tho, LUCKILY! I don't know why....when it started happening it wasn't every time but now it's more often, I am bad and haven't been to the doctor yet but as soon as I start my new job & get insurance I will....
Anyway my cramps are so bad that I get hot and extremely nauseous and nothing seems to help - it's BAD. Moving (walking, etc) makes it worse but I can't lay still, it's too painful, I like wiggle around on the bed or floor or wherever I have to stop until it's over - about an hour or 2. But then for the rest of the day I do'nt want to eat and I feel ucky.
Here's an entertaining little story - last time it happened I was downtown Chicago, I thought I had taken my preemptive Tylenol early enough but apparently not - I ended up having to stop and sit on the ground outside this store b/c if I took on more step I would just collapse - I felt ridiculous! People were staring at me and I was getting ready to heave on the sidewalk - NOT a pleasant experience!!!
I hope you get some help for it cause I know from experience it's not fun!
