I have HPV and Cervical Dysplasia. I have not yet had a LEEP, however, I do know (from a friend) that it causes cramps and you cannot exercise etc etc for a few weeks. If you are getting a LEEP - get an anaesthetic. Of course it is going to hurt - anything that is cut out is going to hurt. I have been to a few Doctors who have not helped me in the slightest. All the information I know on HPV etc (which I think is quite a bit) is due to my own research.
Depending which country you live in, there are a few alternatives. I have found quite a few Clinical Trials in America in relation to Dysplasia. There are very few on HPV at the moment though.
I have researched a site www.alotek.com (http://www.alotek.com) which sells a product called Betamannan. I don't know whether it works yet - I have just started taking it 2 weeks ago. They say it takes about 3 months to get rid of it - I will let you all know.
I have had a colposcopy - which to me felt as if I was just getting a Pap Smear - I am sure there is not much difference. The DR put some vinegar stuff there so that the bad Cells would show up. He then told me not to worry (as they do) as they were not bad. Low and behold when I called for my results, he said they were worse than he thought.
All I can say is never trust only 1 Doctors opinion.
For external Genital Warts, there is a cream called Aldara. You have to get a prescription from your DR, it is also quite expensive. I used it for 4 weeks, but didn't see a change in the Warts.
I will now wait until next week when I have an appointment with my new DR (one which I researched very well), and I will discuss the treatment with him.
I may try a clinical trial first before I do a LEEP. I am sure it is worth the try, if a DR makes a small mistake with a LEEP, you may never be able to have children.
Also, for females, be sure to eat alot of Cartonoid rich foods / vitamins (Including Betacarotene (A), Folate, Vitamin C, Vitamin E). I have read alot on them, and they may help prevent Cancers etc.
Its all worth a try!!!

I too have had Cervical Dysplasia. Mine occurred while I was pregnant. I had to wait until after my son was born before I could have the LEEP procedure done so that I would not have a miscarriage. By the time I found out that I had Cervical Dysplasia, it was already pretty bad. I had to have colposcopy's every few weeks until my son was born because the cancer was growing so fast. The LEEP procedure was painful, but I was extremely relived to have my cancer removed. After it was removed I had to have follow up pap smears several times for the few years that followed, and the cancer has not returned. My best friend had Cervical Dysplasia too, before I met her, and hers has not returned either. I also think that taking antioxidants can not hurt, especially Selenium, Beta Carotene, B-12, and Vitamins A, C, and E that are all said to be cancer fighters. I have never felt better since I started taking antioxidants.

This is the first time I have seen a post with someone who has HPV and Cervical Dysplasia.
For a while I was thinking that a lot of people (women) don’t get both that often. Meaning cervical Dysplasia and visible warts.
Good to find someone in the same predicament.
Good luck with everything. I get the results from my first follow up Pap smear (since my cryotherapy) in a few days. It's pretty much killing my nerves waiting for the results.

I too had HPV and mild (but heading toward severe) cervical displaysia. Generally they go hand in hand in most cases (cervical cases that is), according to my doc...however, I didn't have visible warts. My HPV was a strain that was causing visible damage to cells on my cervix but no typical visible "warts" to speak of.
I totally agree with you Suzan, it's amazing the complete LACK of information you get from your doctors about HPV. Everything I know (which I actually considert to be very little) I found out on my own. There is just NOT a lot of info out there, and typical with every uterus/cervix related issue, no one seems to be doing enough research about it. That's my own personal grr.
I too take a lot of vitamins and it seems to help, if nothing else than for over all health. I am a big proponnent of vitamins, healthy eating and even homeopathy to keep your whole body balance in check. (Although it took having a string of bad health issues to get me there.) And I quit smoking, which interestingly enough (and no one will tell you) is one of the biggest causes of uterine cancer these days. You hear smoking = heart disease/lung disease/lung cancer, but no one says smoking = uterine/cervical cancer. Did that scare me? You bet it did.
Good luck on your results Snuggles...I am in the same boat. My follow up pap is in June, and that sure feels like a long wait to know if I'm healthy or not!

Got my results back!!! It came back Satisfactory, within normal bounds, no bad inside cervical stuff found. I don’t know the exact terminology, the doctor just read the results, and explained them to me over the phone. I'm happy, hope I get the same results six months from now.

Thankyou for your replies.
Snuggles, when you had visible warts, what did you use??? Are they all gone???
I saw my new Gyno and have an appointment now for a LOOP (You may call it LEEP in USA).
I am taking Betamannan, and hopefully will see some results.
Good luck...

I used Aldara for 16 wks. I worked well, but it irritated my vagina a lot. For the last month I have had two noticeable warts and they seem to be going away on their own. Also have some really tiny ones, my doctor told me that they probably wont get bigger, also that their bound to go away on their own. He’s right they are going away on their own their only like little spots.
I never heard of Betamannan.

susan.................yes please keep posting on your experience with beta manna. that is the route i will probabaly take ..... as opposed to rectal surgery..... I am straight and honestly do not have any ideal how i could have got hpv in there... Nothing has ever been in there.... no ones skin,,, and of course the docs look at me like yeah ... your gay..... and the rectal surgeon they sent me to ... The only one in this city.... i swear was praticaly molesting me..... he acted very strange and did unnecessary overkill probing... and touched my penis with his other hand ... seeming accidently... then gave me his home number if i had any questions.... i swear i felt raped ....... i am going to try the manna...... i quit smoking 10 days ago and am working on my health and immune system ... but will be looking into getting the manna when i come back from a business trip in two weeks.... keep us posted on your experience.... thank you so much ...

Jordan, what kind of surgery do they want to do? Do the anal warts pose a chance of turing into cancer like cervical dysplasia does?

Hello everyone, I am a first timer to this site. I have just been told that I have HPV. I dont know what that means. I have tried to do some research and find out exactly what it is but it is not easy.It almost seems if you find info on the topic it is assumed you know the details and that is far from the truth. I have no idea!
My Dr could not even see me for another week to talk to me! I am scared I would like to know if this is something that will be with me forever, for the rest of my life? My Dr is not too helpful, he told me that i have HPv but no cancer and that I should wait to have a pap done in 3-4 months to see where i am at.
I am confused bc if there are abnormal cells why not just get rid of them. Also can anyone tell me about the warts involved with this. It is all new and not one piece of info has said that warts and HPV are directly related to eachother. Is the case that if you have one you have the other? Is that what the whole thing is called for genital warts=HPV?
I have a mild dysplasia and i have had a colposcopy. Should I get another Dr's opinion or stick with the same one. Please help i have none to talk to yet about this. Thank you

Just go to any search engine and type in genital warts, HPV, or cervical dysplasia, and you should find lots of stuff to read. Go to web sites of like the CDC http://www.cdc.gov
Yes, you will have this for the rest of your life there is no cure. HPV can cause genital warts but it doesn’t always. There are many types of HPV; you will learn that when you go reading. Some show no signs, some cause visible warts, some cause cervical or anal dysplasia, and so on.
You say you have mild cervical dysplasia. That can be treated and you can get rid of that, but you will always have HPV. Just because you have no signs of it, it doesn’t mean it’s not there and that you can transmit it to others.

Thank you for your response. I feel like I cant talk to anyone bc if I talk to my sister I know it makes her feel nervous and freaked out. I cant talk to my mom about it bc I am embarrassed and feel as if I have let her down. So it is a secret in my house and i feel awful. My Dr. is not helpful and he makes me feel dirty and uncomfortable. He is not of help. Anything I have found has been from my own research and from the help of this board. So if you dont mind i would like to continue chatting it is a bit comforting to me. I like having someone who understands to talk to. Thanks again

How often does HPV lead to cervical dysplasia (that's cancer of the cervix right?) in women? Are condoms effective in preventing HPV from being transmitted to the cervix even if it it transmitted from the male to the female from skin outside the condom? Or is it the case that once a female is infected anywhere with HPV she runs a higher risk of cervical cancer? What percentage of females with HPV get cervical dysplasia? Does HPV pose any risks to men outside of having warts that must be removed?

Hi,
I have been taking Betamannan for a little while now, but ran out. I have ordered some more so will wait for that to come. I have some small visible warts, so I did try using Betamannan on them for a while. I was also using Tea Tree Oil. I stopped using the Betamannan (ran out) but am still using Tea Tree Oil. I know one or two have dissapeared, and I will know in about a week or so if some others are on their way out (they look like they are getting smaller). Fingers crossed.
I figured out that I must have 2 types of HPV. One which causes dysplasia, which I may have had for a little while, and the most recent is one which causes warts.
Hopefully the Betamannan will work. I went to my new gyno a few weeks ago, but he did not take a Colposcopy or anything. I just made another appointment for a LEEP (LOOP). So, in fact I don't know whether the Betamannan worked or not until I get this procedure done - he will let me know how bad it is. There is a money back guarantee if it doesn't work.
If you feel even the slightest discomfort with your DR, I suggest you get a new one. I couldn't stand my first one, and the one I have now is alot better.
Good luck to everyone.

Dylon, I'll try to answer your questions. :) The problem with HPV is that there aren't a lot of absolutes, but I'll try. (And anyone feel free to contradict! sdp, I'm looking in your well-read direction! :))
How often does HPV lead to cervical dysplasia (that's cancer of the cervix right?) in women? First off, neither displasia or HPV are the same as cervical cancer. However, according to just about everything I've read so far about HPV, the reason they worry so much about cervical displasia/abnormal HPV related cell changes on the cervix is because 98% of women who are diagnosed with cervical cancer have HPV cells in there too. But as usual, nothing is absolute. That could mean absolutely nothing, although the common belief in the medical community is that untreated cervical HPV = cervical cancer.
Are condoms effective in preventing HPV from being transmitted to the cervix even if it it transmitted from the male to the female from skin outside the condom? Supposedly condoms can help prevent the transmission of HPV to the cervix. That's the good news. The bad news is: if you are a carrier of HPV (as a male or female) and you've been handling yourself and vaginally penetrate your partner with your hand/tongue so on, it can be transmitted. Whether or not it makes it up to the cervix is a crapshoot. But HPV/genital warts are extremely contagious, just like herpes (and a number of other STD's).
Or is it the case that once a female is infected anywhere with HPV she runs a higher risk of cervical cancer? This one I can't answer. I don't think external warts raise your chances of cervical cancer, and because doctors can't really PROVE that HPV leads directly to cervical cancer it may not even matter. I suppose in the end it's all about your paranoia and your vigilance about keeping your body healthy, really. From what I have read, it sounds like HPV leads to a more benign cyst like cancer that presents itself in tumor form, however the scarier cancers HPV can cause are head and neck cancer. Weird huh? So who knows.
What percentage of females with HPV get cervical dysplasia? I can't answer this one either. Because HPV can be present without displasia and vice versa, there are no real numbers. Same with HPV or displasia leading to cancer, although the hindsight numbers (as I mentioned above) are 98%. But that isn't particularly helpful, because it doesn't say how many women without cancer had displasia or HPV.
Does HPV pose any risks to men outside of having warts that must be removed? This one is pretty important. HPV in men (even with no visible warts or symptoms) if left long enough can supposedly lead to penile and possibly testicular cancer. (See above on 'supposedly' about the leading to cancer and being vigilant! :)) I still haven't found any accurate reading material on that though...just kind of vague threats of "if you don't treat it, it may lead to" and that kind of thing. Although men can be tested for outward signs of HPV even if they don't see visible warts, the testing process isn't all that accurate. It's the same test as the one they do for women, but they treat the entire length of the penis with the vinegar solution to see if there is any reaction from the damaged cells. Does it work in all cases? Nope. But it is a good piece of mind test if you are afraid you are a carrier.
I don't know if ANY of that helps, and frankly any of it can be rendered moot because there are so many varying reports about what HPV is/how it presents itself/if it's cancerous/how it's transmitted. Each report I've read has different information. Mostly I think the medical community is stumped about it.

Has anyone had any luck with the Beta-Mannan? I'm going to try this route before my doctor pushes the LEEP on me in early 2002. I've ordered a two month's supply which should arrive next week. Also, does anyone have any other suggestions that could be used along with the beta-mannan (i.e., special vitamins, herbs, etc.) Any information you can supply would be GREAT.

Sunny: Here's the web site for beta-mannan information. I have nothing to lose by trying this product as I won't have to face LEEP until next year. I ran across another site where a NY hospital is performing research on this product (unfortunately i did not save it as a favorite). (The hospital may be referenced in the attached site...I'm not sure...) http://www.alotek.com/hpv/alotekinfo.htm
I also ran across one more site where a company won exclusive rights to a HPV vaccine. I believe that it for a specific strain of HPV. http://www.pharmalicensing.com/news/headlines/977356084_3a414534ea02d
There's not much info here because it isn't for the average consumer, but I think it would be helpful to see any up and coming treatments (and hopefully, a cure). It seems to me that health professionals are being reactive to HPV by "slicing and dicing" us with LEEP, laser, etc. with no concern for women who would eventually like to have children (namely ME) rather than being proactive on finding a cure. I, unfortunately, have found VERY LITTLE information on the research on HPV. The health professionals don't treat this as serious (because it is an STD that doesn't need to be reported), yet they are quick to perform surgery (which I completely understand and not disagree). HPV, of course, can turn into cancer; so are the doctors saying that cancer isn't important? Perhaps this should be a reported STD? (I could be wrong here, when I was diagnosed with HPV, it was not a reportable STD.) This drives me nuts, because I definitely want to have children without complications, but I know that I must take care of myself first. Best of luck to you!

SammieL430, thanks so much for taking the time to give me some info on the Betamannan. I have looked at the web sites you put in your reply.
I too, would like to have children one day.I have worries and fears of complications, due to the fact i have HPV. When I was diagonsed with the HPV, the doctors acted as if this was something not to worry about. They give no real information on it.. The information I have today is from my own reasearch. 4 years ago I had no idea HPV was . I had never heard of it . That was until I was told I had it. After the shock and heartache was over I read as much as I could on it.
Today, I am a information seeker. The more we know about this the better off we are.
Again thanks for your time.

Well, I actually had the LEEP done about a month ago. I will say that in no way would I even know that I had the surgery done - I suppose I was lucky. I looked up the Gyno and I am pretty sure he is the best in this country. I did not have any cramps or bleeding - however, when I did get my Period (two weeks later) I did bleed for a few days more than usual.
Anyway, after using Betamannan - and after my results from the Gyno - I found out that my Dysplasia had virtually disappeared. I can't explain how happy this made me. I am sure it would have completely disappeared if I had have taken the medication exactly as prescribed (I used to miss days etc). I am now taking half of the recommended dose each day until I run out.
The 'Warts' that I had were not warts. They were something called molluscum contagiosum - which are meant to be a Pox virus - I am thinking they came because I believed I was going to get them because I had the Wart Virus. The Doctor took a biopsy of one and also burnt the rest off. The burning did not hurt at all and there is no scarring at all.
I have to wait a few months before I get another pap smear - so I will wait until then - hopefully the Betamannan will KILL my HPV virus as well.
I will keep you all posted.
Good Luck.
