heres a quick run down on my story. my mom has been dating a guy for almost 2 years now. back about 4 to 6 months ago, her boyfriend went on a "cheating" spree. they'd seperate, he'd sleep around, they'd get back togther, etc. about 3 months ago my mom had to get bloodwork done, they tested her for everything, and everything cae back fine. last week my mom had to get more bloodwork done (she was scheduled for a surgery) and her results came back yesterday. the office called her and told her they cancelled her surgery because she tested positive for hiv. they are doing a western blot test now and we should have the results by tuesday. we are praying the first test was a mistake and that shes negative. my question is, does anyone know what the chances are of a false positive result for hiv? please respond if you can, i really need some answers. i have spoke to more than a dozen doctors about hiv and researched it on the computer all day. i have found out a ton of things, but i haven't found out what the chances are of a false positive test.

I'm so sorry to hear that. I hope everything is fine.
In high school, we had a blood drive, and my best friend got a call saying that her blood came back "not positive, but not negative for HIV" (what that really means, I don't know. She went and got tested and it was negative. I know it's not the same, but hopefully offers some hope.
Good luck.

western blot std test are for herpes<---hsv<--herpes simplex virus, not hiv, are u sure it was the western blot cause she might have understood the nurse wrong, she might have said herpes, hsv, and ur mom probably heard hiv!, western blot blood test is to determine which herpes a person has , either 1 or 2, i know this cause i caught herpes 1, and thats the test they do for it! hope this helps before ur mom gets a heart attack

i do know they said she was positive for hiv, because they cancelled her surgery beacause of it. i'm not a hundred % sure if it was a western blot test, but thats what my mom said she thought she remembered hearing. she is beside herself, so she may have misunderstood the test, but sad to say, yes she did test positive for hiv. we are praying the next results will be negative, and that the first one was a mistake. we will know for sure by tuesday. i will see if i can't find out what the exact name of the test was, but i know my mom called it a western blot. thank you for your replis, and God bless!

Unless I am terribly wrong the western blot is used to determine HIV/AIDS cases. It may also be used for other STD's but I've always believed that it was the confirmation test for HIV. Sorry to hear this about your mom. And yes, although I'm not sure of the percent, but some tests do show false positives. I sure hope this is the case for your mom.

when i worked with HIV clients they used the western blot but when it came back positive they would automatically do another one so that sounds weird but this was back around 1990....good luck.....there are many more options for hiv people now then there were back then but none the less it is scary
