Hey, I am 17 years old, and I was wondering if there are any symptoms with sexually transmitted diseases? Is there a test you can get to see if you have any? Thanks.

One of the scariest things about STD's is that a lot of people don't have symptoms for a long time! Some STD's won't show symptoms for up to fifteen months, while some people may experience symptoms a month or so after exposure. You could have STD's and not know it. AIDS might not show up on a test for up to six months after one is exposed to it. So the best way to know if you have STD's is to get tested!

Pressure or a bloated feeling in the pelvic region, spotting between periods, pain during intercourse, unusual discharge, itching, burning, sores are all symptoms of STDs. The only way to know is to be tested by a physician, but it is very important that you do so because not everyone experiences symtpoms and if left untreated they can lead to bigger issues (i'e. pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility). I recommend being screened each year during your pelvic/annual gynecelogical exam since so many people have STDs without knowing they have them. If you don't have insurance call Planned Parenthood for affordable rates, but please don't ignore it.
