i am a 21 y/o male. yesterday i was helping my friend caroline with some sorority stuff (moving heavy speakers and tables and whatnot). anyways i met one of her sorority sisters and to make a long story short she ended up giving me oral. later i told caroline about it and she told me that the girl is a total slut on campus. now i am getting all paranoid. i made sure she didn't have any sores on her lips and stuff before getting started. i guess my question is what are the chances of a male getting stds from a female from oral sex? also what types of stds could i get?

The odds are low, but hardly zero.

Herpers is probably the big one, though it would probably be Type 1, and if you already have type 1 orally, too, then you are probably immune to getting it in the genital region.

HPV is possible, but pretty rare. Chlamydia and gonnorhea are possible, but not likely. Occasionally, men will get symptoms leading to a diagnosis of prostatitis, though no infectious organism is ever found.

The odds are on your side, but it is always best to use condoms - even with "nice" girls.

Yes, having type 1 orally already does give some protection from getting it genitally, since your body already has some antibodies, but not total immunity, so it is still quite possible to get re-infected in other locations. I have a friend who spread her coldsores (type 1) to her eye, the doctor thinks it happened because she had a habit of wetting her finger with saliva and moving her contacts around when they got dry. eek! :)

I would say your biggest concern would be herpes, but I am not saying you have it. If you are really concerned go get screened for STDs at you doctors.

Its also possible for HSV-1 to recur in the eye even if you didn't spread it there. Its just the way it works sometimes.

Well I believe most people will have symptoms og HSV within 24 hours to 2 weeks tops. At this point a blood test for HSV would probably come back negative because you most likely have no antibodies yet. The best test for HSV is a culture of an active lesion. SO if you notice a sore on your penis anytime soon go and get the swab taken. I am not saying you definitely got herpes I am just saying that it is probably your biggest concern.

I got herpes from a blowjob and my first lesion showed up within 24 hours. Then I got some of the other symptoms. Tightness in the groin, frequent urination, discomfort when urinating, and swollen testicles. I got a culture taken on the second day that came back positive 3 days later. Then I had a HSV blood test done on the day my culture came back and it came back negative. That is why I am saying the culture is the best test.

Anyway, HSV is not impossible to live with. Each outbreak is less severe than the one before it and within a few years they may stop completely. It will always be present in my body, but the outbreaks may stop. I am lucky in the sense that I have HSV-1 (which is usualy associatd with oral herpes) on my genitals. Since the genitals is not HSV-1s prefered area it loses a bit of its punch.

thank you for your response. i already have HSV-1. i get them on my lips. good thing is i only get them about once a year and they are fairly small and go away in about a week. so i guess that makes me less succeptible to getting it 'down there' which is good i guess. question - when you got that infamous blowjob, did your partner have a noticible lesion on their mouth/lips? or was it just "shedding" that gave it to you?

also, i once went to the univeristy clinic a couple years ago after my ex girlfriend told me she once had HPV and had to get her cervix frozen or something to that effect. i never got warts or outbreaks on my penis, but i went just to make sure. also especially since i have had unprotected sex with several other girls before her. when i got there and i explained that i would like to be tested for this and that, the doctor sat there and stared at me like i had 3 eyes on top of my head. then in a manner in which he makes me feel as if i am wasting his valuable time, he says if you haven't had anything appear on your penis, and haven't had any other symptoms, then what the hell are you doing here? i was relieved to say the least, but i was left feeling as though my questions weren't answered.

so my question is i have been in a non-exclusive relationship someone before that whole blowjob thing happened with that sorority girl. i would feel horrible if i passed something i got to the girl i am with. should i wait to see if i get any symptoms or go to the clinic soon and risk feeling stupid once more? again, the situation is i got a blowjob this past weekend from a super slutty girl, not sure if it's something to lose sleep over. haven't had ANY symptoms at all yet.

Hi Sam, yes, you will have some immunity to getting HSV1 genitally, but the bad thing is if you get a blood test, since you already have it (coldsores) orally, a blood test will come up positive anyway. Blood tests can't show the actualy location of the infection, so unless you have symptoms genitally that you can go get swab tested, it will be impossible to find out if you are infected genitally. Anyways, I also have genital HSV1, contracted through oral sex with my boyfriend, but no cold sore was present at the time....one did appear on his lip about 3 days afterwards, and I started to get symptoms about 2 days after that (5 days after he went down on me), however, herpes can lay dormant for weeks, months, even years after the initial infection before an outbreak occurs.

As far as the HPV goes, my doctor told me that it is so common now, that if someone has had more than 3 sexual partners, they most likely carry at least one strain of HPV, even if they have used condoms with all three partners (because HPV infect the skin around the genitals too, and any skin contact with infected skin can spread it). I don't know if she is right, but that's what she said. It is also hard to test for in men, unless they have visible symptoms, and most men that carry it don't get visible symptoms, and not all strains of HPV cause visible warts, some just cause cellular changes. I don't believe they have an actual blood test for HPV yet (or at least it's not available to the public yet), and the only way they can test is for visible symptoms.

I hope that helped somewhat. :)
